Liberal music is alive and well...
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 04:31 AM by FDRrocks
It makes me so happy. I saw many on this board asking where the protest music is. It's around, you just don't see it in the mainstream. I've also seen people here say that Eminem is going to revive musical activism. That's bullshit.

Punk rock has never given in. And they have spawned children that even I hate (prime example: Emo). But regardless of the band label, punk-rock has always been liberal and its great.

The Rock Against Bush cd's have given me tremendous hope. I am devoted to this music. To see bands that I figured were sellouts such as Green Day, No Doubt (well they still are sellouts, but they used to be my favorite thill they fire the brass section. I had doubts about them, coming from the OC and all) and the Offspring appearing on these records amazed me.

Eminem ain't the new activism, punk rock and its (sometimes horrible) offspring are.

It makes me feel great. God bless Joe Strummer and Jello Biafra, who are, in my opinion, the founders of punk, which is not a music style, but a contrarian life-style.

edit: BTW the best song on both the discs, in my opinion, is "Let Them Eat War" by Bad Religion, download the song, this band has never given in.

1. Ahem. Lou Reed was the founder of punk.
Or, at the very least, the inspiration for punk.

3. It's all about perception my friend...

That's why I added the "my opinion" part. No one ever agrees on the matter of who started punk. I stick to the two people that influenced my attitude when I was a frosh. Jello and Joe are my heroes. As for the VU, I realize thier impact, but the only songs I can sit through are Sweet Jane and Heroin. I can't, with my short depth of knowledge, see where they connect with punk.

I've eveb seen people say Ziggy Stardust/Bowie started punk. To each thier own. Punk is so beautiful when the tag isn't misplaced.

edit: and I would rather not see the thread dragged down to the usualy debate about who started it. Maybe i set myself up for it. I'm just saying, punk rock groups have spoke out against governments since they've been formed. The Reagan Youth were especially enlightening. Who really care who started it. It's been liberal forever, and it bothers me to say the outfit of the social revolution will be a black hoodie because Eminem wrote a song that was happily picked up by the establishment for financial reasons.

Punk has never resented. The second Conservatives Punks (the website features on the Daily Show and mentioned on DU much ealier, as usual) was set up, it was demolished by real punks.

5. I was just being an asshole
For being an asshole's sake :)

you make some good points about the role of punk music, though. I think it's vital that we use punk music to energize the youth vote at the midterms

4. Eminem makes Dildo Reilly angry. That goes a long way with me.
Dildo Reilly has given me a much greater appreciation for all kinds of music that he doesn't like.
