26. maybe you're part of the problem
this was meant to be "subtle humor", not a personal attack my friend:) as for humor, it's subjective;)

4. Yes!
Activism is very down. I posted this morning about the latest Redefeatbush.com project and got hardly a whimper. I guess people don't want to go to Ohio and protest the vote.

6. I just took a month off from DU. This is my first day back.
No, it's not lame. To me it feels like the last outpost of humanity in a universe growing bleaker by the minute. Sure, there's lameness puddling all around our feet; there always was. But the central IDEA here is what keeps me coming back.

18. Thank you!
Boy, reading the 'Results" forum is reaaaaallly depressing. And the new groups really sucked all the air out of the lounge. It's like coming back to the house you grew up in and finding a bunch of extra closets.

But DU still gives me some hope for our country, so I can't give it up (even if it's a placebo.)

it seems that many of the elements that made it so vital were sent off to other areas...

"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" ?

This is a general comment not aimed at you, cuz I don't know you :)

17. Bill Clinton's words, still ringing in my ears
...from his appearance on "The Daily Show" to promote his book, when asked about Bush and Karl Rove's brand of filthy politics:

"This is the way they've always done it. They do it because they can get away with it, and because it works. When they can no longer get away with it, or when it stops working, they will do something else."

For me, the hardest thing to come to grips with is the fact that Rove GOT AWAY WITH IT. There is a heightened awareness that any future "activisim," moving forward, will be in direct opposition against people who "get away with it."

Not IMPOSSIBLE, mind you...just frigging DISGUSTING.

20. I wouldn't characterize it as lame
But I think a lot of people are feeling pretty dispirited and are unable to stir themselves yet. Everyone reacts differently to things - there are those who immediately get angry and want to act and there are those who need to crawl off to a hole somewhere and lick their wounds for a while.

I think DU feels a little shattered right now. Four years ago, the situation was grim - how much more grim is it now? If the concentrated effort of those years couldn't change things, what are we up against now? That, along with the holidays which either distract or depress a lot of people, I think accounts for a lot.

I think in time things will begin to coalesce again and there will be a little more direction and cohesive sense of purpose. But right now, I know I for one am feeling very fragile. And I stick to the Lounge and kind of avoid the more political discussions.

I think the humor is still good, though. There's just fewer people right now who are participating in it.

so I can't speculate on how the board used to be.

I like it here though. :)
