What's the difference between graduate school and college?

16. College (or university) is

post-secondary (after high school). Usually people finish high school around 18 yrs old, then go on to college (if they are going to college). That takes around four years to get a Bachelor's degree (college degree).

Then graduate school is post-college. So I'm getting a Masters. I'll decide later if I want to go whole-hog and get a PhD. That's the highest level, along with law degrees, medicine, etc.

you have to have a college degree (bachelors) to enter graduate school and a Doctorate is the same as a PhD. Just another name for it, and yes, it is graduate school, too, one level above a masters. You have to have a masters to get a doctorate.

I guess I could have just done this, sorry:

1. High school diploma
2. Bachelor's degree
3. Master's degree
4. Doctorate of some kind (PhD, JD--attorney, MD--doctor, DVM--veterinary medicine, etc.)

either really instructionally sound and get kids digging in, intellectually (very good)

or superficial silliness done on behalf of a buzzword.

My advice - take in a big dose of skepticism... look for the theories behind and WHAT they are trying to accomplish and weigh for yourself whether that makes sense (both what is trying to be accomplished...and how it is intended to be accomplished)... and note the silly "knock offs" that are all bells and whistles with lack of understanding of the substance.

For example: Gardners work in Multiple Intelligences is very intriguing. BUT have seen it dumbed down to silliness where folks assign "arts" roles to those that they think are dumber...others due the thinking work than the "artist" draws about it... rather than using the proclivity towards art to delve into and strenghten skills in other areas (example... art to depict a scene of the great depression, incorporating as many symbols as possible... used as a spring board for writing/critiquing/ thinking about those symbols and their historical significance; often it is only draw a picture about the great depression.. and ends there (to which I ask... what exactly is the point???)

Think deeply... and in time you will begin to ask the questiohs that will let you judge future 'fads' and those that are adopted... be able to guide people to think complexly about what they are doing instructionally... and why/how - that is what allows one to grow into a strong instructional leader.

Just my 2 cents/perspective... great field... and the deeper you take it - the more real impact that you will be able to have on more students' learning. Again, good luck!

just about everything you wrote, I was just talking to someone today about. I was complaining about this silly program one middle school paid $10K for in my district. It is all show and no go. A lot of bells and whistles and very little substance.

And worse, in my mind: no organizing pattern...no overarching pedagogical theory at ALL. Just a bunch of "cute" activities thrown together to wow principals who don't know any better and blow all their Title I money on it.
