At least fast-food wise. It is spit roasted veal and lamb, with tomatoes, red cabbage, lettuce, yogurt, pepper sauce and garlic served either in a roasted pita or a Tortilla (Dürüm); topped with hot pepper spice. http://www.igougo.com/planning/journalEntryDining.asp?journalID=21420&entryID=14813&n=The+D%F6ner+Kebab+and+other+street+food+sensations

31. The Doner Kebab enabled the American intelligence effort in Berlin |
|
during the Cold War.
We ran ops 24 hours a day and the swing-shift people got off work at 11:30. When you get off work, of course you want to have dinner. But because the Army has a regulation that says a mess hall can't serve more than three meals a day, ours couldn't be open when we needed to eat. Fortunately, Ali's imbiss stand was right across the street from the main gate; we'd get the driver to let us out the back door of the bus so we could go across the street to Ali's, snag a doner, some pommes and a beer or a soda, and we'd be set to go.
This is one of the many ways the Air Force and the Navy are better than the Army--all Air Force bases and Navy bases have at least one mess hall that's open for a midnight meal, because people with meal cards, like police troops and duty officers, are at work then. You can't even get an exception to policy for this!
Ali's doner kebabs were spit-roasted lamb on Turkish flatbread with lettuce, salt and garlic-yogurt sauce.

So it even served the free world, one more reason to prefer it to McD's. :toast:
You should write this up, this sounds just like the type of cold-war story Berlin newspapers or magazines love to print.

35. I'd like to do a "spies in the Cold War" book |
|
Unfortunately, it would be as much fun to read as an "accountants in the Cold War" book--my discipline didn't do much if any fieldwork, and books of derring-do are what sell. Tom Clancy didn't get rich writing about guys who sat at desks compiling lists.

When we were in Canada, the McDonald's there had French toast and Omelettes on the breakfast menu. And here at home, we have breakfast burritos and that awful McBiscuit with egg.
