but what is the difference between a Mexican and Hispanic? I know there is a difference, but do you know the difference?

hispanics could come from anywhere south of the border, except maybe brazil.

2. I think Mexican refers to anyone who is from Mexico

and hispanic refers to anyone of Spanish descent? Like those from Ecuador, Honduras, etc. I am not positive however.

Hispanic is a language/culture group that includes all latinos and spaniards. Mexicans are generally a mixture of white (Spanish) and Indian. A hispanic can be white, black, indian, or any combination of the above.

Latino is short for Latinoamericano which refers to Spanish speakers specifically in Latin America unlike Hispanic which refers to any Spanish speaker.

Hispanic is the Latin word for Spain.

Mexicans are peoples of Spanish descent and Native Mayans, Aztecan--maybe?, etc. and Indians. Whereas Hispanics are basically of Spanish descent.

6. As a Colombian-American who grew up in Miami

I always considered myself "Latino" or "Latin" as do the other Latin Americans who live in south Florida. It wasn't until I moved to the southwest when I suddenly became a "Hispanic". As an old girlfriend once told me, "out here, you're Hispanic."
Right now, I call myself Hispanic or Latino interchangably. It doesn't make a difference to me.
Another weird thing about living out west was that even though people knew where I was from and knew my background, they assummed that I would be an expert in Mexican culture.

both legal and illegal who prefer not to be called Hispanics.
They're proud to be from Mexico.

thought they were one and the same (and I'm thinking the news and newspaper media use the two phrases interchangeably). So, Mexicans are/can be Hispanics?

All Mexicans are hispanic but not all hispanics are mexican. Like all Pepsi is a soft drink but not all soft drinks are pepsi.

Hispanics, blacks and whites and yellows and dusky and... and... and... so what the hell happened? It will never cease to blow my mind that more people voted the wrong way. Still makes me sad...
