Is there a freeware/shareware replacement for PC Anywhere?

Does anyone know if their is any freeware/shareware available that does the same thing as PC anywere i.e. allow remote access to a computer over the internet. I sometimes get SOS calls from my Mom (she lives overseas) re. her computer problems and I was thinking it would be much easier to help her out if I had a way of logging onto her machine rather than trying to explain the details long distance over the phone or via emails. I looked at PC Anywhere and it seemed quite expensive. I'm sure I've heard talk of a shareware/freeware type replacemente for PC Anywere but can't remember any of the details. If anyone has info they can share, I'd appreciate it. We are both running Windows 98. She has dial up access and I have DSL.

6. I'll fourth it.
I have to use both for various projects, but vnc is what I prefer.

Fewer features, but not missing anything I need.

Like those acid flashbacks we paid for but still haven't experienced.
