Notre Dame has fired Tyrone Willingham as head coach....
....short blurb on MSNBC.

Article noted that ND rarely fires coaches--just doesn't renew contracts--Tyrone had one more year remaining.

A team that can beat Tennessee and Michigan, but lose to Pitt, BC and BYU, is NOT a well-coached team. Good riddance to the guy who considers Condo-liar Rice a "dear, dear friend."

1. Dammit - Bring back Faust
Jerry Faust is my all-time favorite ND coach. The day ND is eliminated from nat'l championship contention (2d loss) is better than Christmas and my birthday combined.

4. how much you wanna bet 'Butch' Davis gets the job?
I think Tyrone deserved one more year. He DID turn the offense around, but apparently at the cost of the defense. 5 losses of 31 points in three years can do anyone in, I guess.

5. This Is BS
I am a huge ND fan, but they have treated Ty shabbily throughout this entire process, from his "third-string" hiring process to this firing, which they almost never do. It's one more year, they should have let him finish out his contract like they did for even really shitty coaches like Faust and mediocre ones like Davie.

The only thing I could excuse this for would be if they snagged Jon Gruden, but I think he's probably tied up in the NFL for the next several years (even with his "Notre Dame" out clause, I doubt he'll leave).

6. I disagree
he didn't treat every game like a big game - turned up the hate against Michigan but didn't take Boston College seriously. Also, I couldn't stand his sea of green - showed his Michigan State roots.

7. We Always Seem to Deflate Against BC
I will never forget the game after we beat Florida State, back in the day. UGH.

Not sure what you mean by sea of green.

8. Back in the day when wins actually mattered? That was the beginning
of the BC curse if you ask me--they have our number now, no doubt about it.

11. I Am Still Holding Out Hope for Gruden
He's a SB native, and has always dreamed about coaching for ND. He would bring us back to the glory days, I have no doubt. Not only is his coaching phenomenal, but he would also revive our anemic recruiting.

13. Well, when they were last recruiting, they didn't even consider him!
Come on, it's a no-brainer--he'd be great. I really think the powers that be don't really care about restoring the football program anymore. Although I am surprised they fired Tyrone--fiigured they'd just let him ride it out, so maybe the attitude is changing there--maybe the alumni are keeping their wallets closed until they start caring again.

15. "don't really care about restoring the football program"????
That is the most bizarre statment I've read in awhile...especially in light of today's action.

16. Read the whole post--I said that today's action surprised me...
...up until this point they truly appeared not to care--come on, Tyrone was in over his head, so was Bob Davie--they were not seriously recruiting coaches who could play in the big leagues--show me an example (other than firing Tyrone) in the past several years that is an indication they were ready to compete again. You can't.

14. You have got to be kidding me.
Gruden is the very definition of "overrated."

17. Gruden's Buccaneers DESTROYED His Old Raiders
He's a great coach. Even if he's "overrated" for the NFL, he'd be head and shoulders above his competition in college.

And the recruiting would be unstoppable. Every high school player would love to have his access and connections to the NFL.

9. The fans all dress in green shirts
they look like they're at Michigan State. I like it better when they wear navy.

10. I Kinda Like the Green and Gold Uniforms
Even though they didn't work for us in our big bowl game back during Holtz's day.

As for the fans...what could be more Irish than green? :-)

And I don't like Michigan State, so it bugs me.
