14. A fellow Virginian betrays me.

Gee, isn't that a murder suspect holding up the paper. Oh, don't get me started in the Hoakies or whatever they're called, perennial under achievers. Now I get the link -- Ravens=criminal element; Hoakies=criminal element. At least Nebraska won the national championship when they recruited criminals. What's the VTech excuse.

Congratulations, that's the most upsetting message I've received on DU.

16. I'm glad for Ray. It's that Tony guy and his belly flop that gets me.
You didn't even need to respond. I'm having nightmarish flashbacks from your photo. Totally devastated and ready to jump out my first floor window. "The horror, the horror..."

Actually, I was impressed with VTech's win over UVA. Hope the get a good bowl bid. They deserve it after a tough season. Move to VA after you graduate, we need more Democrats here! Maryland will do fine without you.

Edit: "the most upsetting message" comment was actually a compliment. I was left sputtering.

9. Dick Butkus

Dick Butkus, Linebacker/Center
Illinois, 1962-1964

Known more for his intensity and ferocity as a pro superstar, Dick Butkus began his legacy as the best linebacker to ever play college football. Everyone knows all about his hitting and meanness, but most don't remember just how fast he was in college with running back quickness making play after play after play.

It wasn't just the 373 tackles he made in his career, it was the way he made the tackles as the most unblockable linebacker college football has ever seen. Butkus set the standard to which all other linebackers are measured with the Butkus Award going each year to the nation's best college football linebacker.

The 1963 Illini: Following a miserable 2-7 season, the 1963 Illini shocked the Big Ten led by Butkus and the solid defense going 8-1-1 on the way to the Rose Bowl. With Butkus leading the defense and fullback Jim Grabowski the star on offense, the Illini beat Washington 17-7 to finish with a No. 3 AP ranking.

The Illinois tradition: When you think of schools with a tradition of great linebackers and you'll instantly think of Penn State, maybe Alabama and possibly USC. Illinois can boast a group of linebackers as strong as any school led by Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Scott Studwell, Kevin Hardy, Dana Howard, Simeon Rice (who began at linebacker) and John Holecek.

The legendary pro: Taken in the first round by the Chicago Bears, Butkus went on to become the greatest linebacker to ever play pro football according to most observers going to eight straight Pro Bowls and being named All-NFL in seven of his nine seasons. Before knee injuries shortened his career, Butkus was fast enough to be everywhere on the field and strong enough to take down any player with some of the meanest hits the NFL has ever seen.

Butkus also played an the offensive side as well as a center. The legacy lives on as Luke Butkus was also a center at Illinois.

Honors:

College Football Hall of Fame - 1963
Pro Football Hall of Fame - 1979
Finished third in Heisman voting - 1964
Consensus All-America - 1963, 1964
All-Big Ten - 1962, 1963, 1964
American Football Coaches Association Player of the Year - 1964
Silver Football as Big Ten Most Valuable Player - 1963
NFL All-Pro - 7 times
