Is anyone else having a problem with Asian ladybugs? |
|
They are all over Champaign, and they are biting. They seem to be worse this year than last. Is anyone else having problems with them?

The global warming may be spreading these hornets north of their usual home! Don't EVER mess with the nests because these bad boys will catch you and make you pay! Here is some info. on the 'Baldfaced Hornet' http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/entomology/factsheets/hornets.htmlhttp://www.cirrusimage.com/Bald-faced_hornet.htmA Shop Vac will take care of ladybugs in a hurry!

2. big outbreak last yr in southeast Louisiana... |
|
...and I'm told many other parts of the country. Never had one bite, and I did pick em up and put em outside when they came in for the winter on some of my herb plants. Different species or different ways of handling them? I dunno. There was supposedly a huge population explosion last year but I have not seen many yet this year -- maybe when and if winter comes -- right now we are still in "love bug" season here.
I found an ant lion the other day. I had not known they were so large -- around 1.5 inches long and quite scary-looking -- I thought they were something out of Aesop's Fables and not a real insect (if they are an insect?).
As for B/W hornets, something is bubbling in the back of my brain about them but I'm not remembering it yet. It'll come back to me though...
Weird world.

4. We usually don't see them till winter |
|
They come out during the occasional warm spell. And in swarms. This seems to happen because their predators aren't around in the winter.

|

I expect them to "bloom" in Wisconsin in very soon.
Ain't biocontrol mistakes grand? You really have to stop and wonder about the things we don't know...who would have ever thought the little buggers would bite people?
on edit...I think they are here...I just walked around the garage and spotted a mess of them.

7. Lots of people don't believe me when I tell them they bite |
|
My dad was riding his bike one day a few years ago, and one flew into his eye. He tried to blink it out and it bit him right on the eyeball. His eye was puffy and disgusting for a week. I work outside in a natural area, so I have to deal with them all the time. I can't wait until the frost.

I was outside with my dog the other day and was wearing sandals when I felt a really nasty pinch on my little toe. I looked down to see one of those nasty ladybug-wannabes chomping on my toe! It was really disturbing, something black was sticking out from it's behind (or it's front, I really couldn't tell). I killed it, of course. That'll teach that little bastard!

"What do they eat when they can't get Hobbit?"
I swear, one flew over, landed on my face and CHOMP!!!!
Oh, the Yelow Jackets are into their Sugar/Carb frenzy now, too. Careful swigging from the can if you're outside!
