Poll question: Tonight's flamebait debate: Is /The Smurfs/ a sexist cartoon?
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 05:51 PM by LoZoccolo
In The Smurfs, Smurfette was created by Gargamel to destroy the smurfs. Does this make it a sexist cartoon?

1. It is a stupid-ist cartoon
Sexist, feminist ... it was just dumb. And hideous-looking.

3. I say no
Within the context of the show, it is explained at one point that all smurfs are assexual. They aren't born, rather, they are brought to Papa Smurf by the stork. This explains why many display male characteristics, but many also display female characteristics.

If we can surmise that the Smurfs are just dramatic interpretations of the diary of Papa Smurf, it is easy to see that the voices chosen may have been incorrect. Many smurfs may have sounded much more feminine and therefore non-genderless.

4. Why does the word "smurfs"...
always remind me of marshmallow cereal. The Lucky Charms kind, or that weirdo cereal with alphabet letters and marshmallows.

I have some weird Pavlov's dog type association with THE SMURFS & MARSHMALLOW CEREAL...

Odd.

7. Probably cartoons you watched as a kid had the commercials
for the cereal. It's made a permanent connection in your brain, which is scary as fuck and probably makes the ad people at General Mills very, very happy.

10. More information and controversy regarding Smurfette's origins.
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 06:04 PM by LoZoccolo
http://bluebuddies.com/help/smurfette_created_by_gargamel.htm

- Gargamel's formula for creating Smurfette was "Sugar and spice but nothing nice...A dram of crocodile tears...A peck of brid brain...The tip of an adder's tongue...Half a pack of lies, white, of course...The slyness of a cat...The vanity of a peacock...The chatter of a magpie...The guile of a vixen and the disposition of a shrew...And of course the hardest stone for her heart...."

- Smurfette had black hair and was evil until Papa Smurf transformed her with "plastic smurfery".

21. I'd say no, but only by 1980's cartoon standards.
There was a Smurf for every classification or stereotype you could think of, Smurfette is the girl Smurf, Brainy Smurf is the nerd, Painter is the French Smurf, etc. Besides, I loved that show. God, I've said too much, haven't I?
