I just saw this hot "fox" running down the street

Really, my wife and I live in suburbia Columbia, SC and just saw a real fox running after a cat down the street. It was weird. Only the third fox I have seen in my life. Well four including my wife.

1. I saw one in Forest Acres in Middleburg when I was delivering papers

Possibly a function of the time of night; we probably have a good number of them.

2. kinda strange, huh..

i live in suburban st. paul. had a handsome red fox stroll through my yard while I was sitting on the front step a few months ago. It didn't even notice me sitting there in the dark. A couple of deer came through not too long ago. my neighbor said they were eating his tomatoes.
and last summer, i went out for a late-night bike ride and almost ran over an oppossum. that was pretty strange. at first i thought it was just a great big rat. but when i got closer i saw that it was all white and had that long, long tail. they don't usually get this far north because it's too cold for them in the winter....they have no fur on their nose, ears or tails. if you do see them they often have lost portions of those extremities to frostbite. but this one had no such problems. he froze for a second or two and i was sure i would squish him and probably fall; then he bolted into the ditch.

9. now that you mention it...I'll bet the cat went home just fine...

....in most areas where you'll find foxes you will also find prey animals that are much easier to take down than a house cat. Pound for pound kitties are built to protect themselves pretty well. Provided, of course, that it had not been declawed, which is a good argument for not doing so if your cat ever ventures outside (this apart from the argument that it causes the cat pain.)
Foxes can usually find plenty of rabbits, squirrels and field mice to keep them satisfied....

12. In St. Paul I saw

a racoon loloping up Benhill over by Linwood Rec. Though it was a cat with a funny gait, but as I got closer I saw how BIG it was. Really strange.

3. foxes in the 'burbs

I live in the jersey suburbs and we saw a red fox one night about four years ago. That's the only time, though, and haven't seen him since.

7. Never a case

of a fox killing a cat. Many domestic cats are substantially larger and more solidly built than the average red or gray fox (7 pounds). Foxes rarely take on other predators (coyotes kill enough foxes to eliminate them all together in some areas-coyotes DO kill cats as well.) In all likelihood, the fox made a fake at the cat, and the cat flinched enough to start the chase. Foxes will attempt to drive animals way from their hunting grounds if they think they can get away with it!


On edit; I've always been fascinated and charmed by foxes since I first saw one at a campground in Ohio as a child. I've read quite a few books on the topic, but the information above I learned while reading about wolf restoration projects. It seems that wolves kill coyotes, and coyotes kill fox, and foxes don't kill other predators but do eliminate more rodents than the other two canines. Wolves won't kill fox (not a threat to their mainstays). So, when wolves are eliminated from an ecosystem, coyotes increase, fox decrease, and small rodents and deer become over abundant. It's amazing how interconnected it all is!

10. Kit Fox

I've seen several Kit Fox's here in Freeper city (Fresno Ca.)

But there are enough oppossums and armadillo here to make sure that my cats are left alone.
