How do you KNOW you're popular on DU?

(total_post_count-your_post_count)/total_post_count * minutes_since_thread_inception = thread_popularity_index

So you get a (30-9)/30*25 = 17.5 for this thread.

Now average this out for all your threads....

But we can probably assume a standand pecentage post. I suspect posting numbers and lurking numbers are related (a non-linear curve of some sort).

41. A little self-thread support

I think is neccessary for a thread to take off. Unless your thread is titled something like "I just won a gajillion dollars with Lotto" you need to coerce your thread till you get the little fire icon.

I dont know if the index would work correctly in another forum. Here in the lounge, once it goes of the page, its dead, but elsewhere threads can apparently rise from the dead several times.

I would probably need to add a modifier like:

index+Number_of_days_over_one_day_with_posts*30

so that a thread thats interesting enough to last several days due to interest wont have its index whither away to nothing due to low volume of post but long time staying power..

I think Amazon does do something like this. The whole idea of "Recommendations" must be based on a similar algorithym based on what you've looked at and bought, compared with what OTHER people have looked at and bought. This stuff is actually kinda cool... :D

is super cool. I went through the process of entering my entire music collection in my profile there, ranking each album on their scale of like/dislike. Now, when I want to get a new cd I just ask it to give me some recommendations, and see what it spits back. Often it gives some great recommendations for bands I'd never heard of but are very cool.

Then I go down to the local shop and buy it. Very cool.
