I watched "The Biggest Loser" for the first time last night |
|
WOW. I think it's great that there is a show dealing with the problem that millions of americans deal with - weight.
Unlike those ridiculous "bachelor" shows with the young, beautiful, shallow people.
Anyone else watch this one?

3. I've watched it before |

I think it is a good thing to bring these problems to the light. But I'm not sure that I agree with voting someone off because they didn't lose enough weight. Fat people usually don't have too much self-esteem to begin with, and I can't imagine having to take a blow like that...

5. I only watched the show once... |
|
...but I was really surprised to see that they eliminated the person who'd lost the least weight. I'd thought that there were simply going to be two teams competing to see which team could lose the most overall weight by the end of the contest.

if it wasn't yet another cutthroat, exploitative game show masked as reality. I found it intriguing at first as well, but the whole contest aspect of it is a turnoff. If it was more like that show "Cold Turkey" (where 10 people live together while trying to quit smoking), I could tolerate it.

7. I admit, I'm hooked on watching the weighing part, that's exciting. |
|
But after, in the elimination part, when they get all cut throat and turn on one another, I have to switch it off.
And yeah, it's cool that they're helping people lose weight, but it's also about as unreal a "reality" show as it gets. Who in real life that is is THAT overweight can afford to take the time these contestants devote to weight loss and exercise? Who can afford private trainers and dieticians? So then I wonder--who is the audience this show targets? Is it a chance for those of us at home and not obese to gawk at/mock fat people? Or is it meant to inspire others to weight loss?
In many regards, this show strikes me as inauthentic and possibly mean-spirited. (See comment in above post about overweight people and low self-esteem.)

8. But the woman voted off last night had a great insight |
|
She said that all the things she was doing while she was there, she could do on her own. It wasn't like they gave her some magic potion and she lost weight. And now she knows she can do it. I thought that was cool.
