My son is in JROTC. A few weeks ago, we were at another school for a drill meet. The host school's JROTC unit was raffling off this amazing quilt (had American flags on it) as a fund raiser, so I bought a ticket.
It turns out, I've won it.
I was thinking of giving it to my folks as a Christmas present.
Is that tacky? I mean, it only cost me $5. It's obviously worth a lot more than that, but something feels funny about giving a gift that took so little effort of me. Or am I just being silly?
I *could* wrap it around a batch of my special peanut butter fudge that I know they love.....

1. I don't think it is tacky at all |
|
It's probably a step up from re-gifting. :)

of including another present inside it. Don't sweat over the "effort" it took for you to win the quilt. It sounds lovely and I'm sure will be appreciated. Isn't it the thought that counts? :-)

If you spent five bucks on the lottery and won 20 million dollars, would you feel bad about giving them a million for Christmas?

6. I guess I hadn't thought of it like that. |
|
It's not a million dollars, but it IS a very beautiful quilt.

Since you're giving them such a nice quilt why don't you send the fudge to me, i mean they don't need both, right?

22. How can a flag quilt be jingoistic? |
|
Seems to me that the only way it could be is if it has some kind of writing on it.

having writing on a flag is not the only thing that is jingoistic.

25. I agree, if it's jingoistic, trash it. |

No need to spread more fear and xenophobia through a seemingly innocent quilt. Propaganda know end to the means to accomplish the goal.

not how much you spend. And I'm sure you wouldn't even consider giving it to them unless you thought it would be an appropriate gift that they might use and appreciate.

If you are giving it to them because you think they will really like it then go for it. If you are doing it just to get it out of the house then...well, go for it anyway..lol. Kidding. I think it is a great idea.

Homemade quilts are worth alot of money, and if your folks are aware of the value of quilts, even if they do know it was won at a raffle, they will realize it is a HUGE gift. You could have turned around and resold it and kept the money, but you chose to give it to them. They will love it. Thats from someone who garage sales all year and always gives the best xmas presents to my neices and nephews..spending less than $5 apiece. Im their favorite gift giver.

But I know my mom voted for Kerry and was literally sick over the election results.
My Dad probably voted for Kerry too, but he never talks about politics, so there's really no way to gauge that.

then make them a LOT of your good stuff and yeah, give them the quilt. If you feel really guilty about it, buy them something else, too.
Your parents sound like good people!

19. Not at all. I am making a scrapbook for my mother from pictures she |
|
has taken and some I have taken over the years. She's owned the pictures forever, I'm just preserving them with supplies I already have and I a scrapbook album that I already had. :hi: Give and feel good about it. :hi:

then that's fine.
If you wanted to give it to them because it didn't cost you much even though you didn't know/didn't care if they'd like it, that would be tacky.
Your situation is not tacky though :)

21. GREAT idea for a gift and not tacky in the least. |
|
It isn't the dollar amount of the gift anyway, but whether it is something they will appreciate.
I would appreciate a quilt from a friend, no matter how they obtained it, as long as they didn't steal it. :-)
Your parents will LOVE it. What a fabulous gift with a great story behind it.
