53. The number one religion in Pakistan is Islam.
Most Sikhs live in India, where they make up about 2 percent of the population. I don't know a lot about their spiritual beliefs, but they are the people who don't like cuting their hair, so most people from India you see with a turban on are Sikhs (they pile up their hair under the turban). They also carry a dagger and a comb at all times.

Yes, I recall their knife and head dress. I was thinking there were more of them in Pakistan... Let's see; the Kukri knife is the Gurkha's though, and they're from Nepal, right? Perhaps that's where I went wrong.

47. Something I find interesting
is how the list from person to person can be so diverse. I would have called myself new thought, but I struggle with the personal vs. impersonal nature of God which is something that often people feel strongly on. I'd love to go over to the Freeper site and list this and see if they would actually take the test and post results.

I've never spent time there, but what impresses me so much about DU (and I don't really call myself a "democrat" or a "liberal" although my beliefs would fit either of those terms) is how intelligent and thoughtful people are on this board vs. the little bit I've seen on the Repug boards where someone's a genius if they spell correctly or know how to use a comma.

49. I dont' think it's slanted...
I belong to a Catholic website, and we've all taken the test over there. On that board, the results were a lot different, with Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholicism, or Liberal to Moderate Protestantism coming in the top three. (Usually closely followed by Reform Judaism.)

I find the test to be quite accurate. :) I think that the population here might be skewed toward a preference for Universal Unitarianism, Non-religious belief (Secularism), or peaceful beliefs (Quakers). It's really interesting. If you guys belong to another website (non-liberal), you should have them take the test over there to see what type of results that you get.

54. I'm a Jew and I scored 100% for reform Judaism!
I'll take that as an A+ on the exam :)

That was an interesting test. I haven't thought about all those issues for a while. I also scored an 87% for Orthodox Judaism, I suppose because while core theologial beliefs can be found throughout all streams of Judaism, it is the level of practice that seperates us.

If you asked me, I'd say I came down somewhere between Reform and Orthodox, but closer to reform.

with conservative theology, e.g. salvation through faith not works, with a heavy emphasis. However, I did make note of karmic tendencies when asked why there is evil in the world, along with other contributing factors.

When asked about helping the poor and other social responsibility issues, I was all for following Jesus' teachings (unlike Falwell et al :eyes:). I think this explains why the conservative/liberal mainline Protestants were so close together in my results, when ordinarily freepers think "OMG u librul go to hell!!!111!!!"

But like I said earlier, I'm not going to try to convert anybody. To each his own.:)

24. Roman Catholic (28%)
25. Seventh Day Adventist (28%)
26. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (21%)
27. Jehovah's Witness (4%)

And why Roman Catholic and Seventh Day Adventist both at 28%? I don't see the connection. For one, Roman Catholics don't wander neighborhoods ringing doorbells and saying "Hi. We're Roman Catholics, and.... (blah, blah, blah, while pushing pamphlets in your face)".

And what's with the Scientology crap at 53%???? I DESPISE Scientology.

Being raised a Roman Catholic, and having it rated #24 out of 27 possible religions in this test, the nun that used to smack my hands with a ruler must be rolling over in her grave.

At least "Neo-Pagan" (90%) has a nice ring to it. :)

This time, my answers were the same except I changed the last half of the answers from "moderate" to "strong" and it turns out I'm something along the lines of a Unitarian Liberal Quaker Neo-Pagan Secular Humanist. Well, I can buy the Unitarian and Humanist part, and I still think "Neo-Pagan" sounds pretty cool, whatever it is. :)

Secular Humanism with religions. I find that distasteful. And I think they should have a non-religious or atheist category. They seem to still be trying to drag those with no god belief into some kind of religious category.

138. two sets of replies...
I wasn't sure, as a non-spiritual atheist, on how to answer the last 8 questions, given these instructions:

"Respond to the following moral statements (Questions 13-20) based on how you would want your religion or faith category to address them."

since all the answers were either agree, disagree, or "not applicable"- i went thru once and answered as if "not applicable" was not an option- agreeing or disagreeing with each statement.
the second time i answered "not applicable" to all of the last 8 questions.

My results:

(with agree/disagree answers last 8 questions)-

1. Secular Humanism (100%)

but not in a faith-based religious way.

I would always consider myself more of a secular humanist than unitarian universalist.

207. I am too
Or more importantly, I'm worried about religions that tell their members how to vote. That's one of my biggest peeves going into this election. I have a mormon friend who, I feel, votes Republican solely because his family and church tells him too. I think he is very intellegent, so it's obviously frustrating to me.
Thanks for the discussion!

I'm a Metodist, so #1 doesn't surprise me. I'm pretty cool with the top 4...
Kind of surprised that I tested that high for numbers 14-15, to be honest. Yech!

192. I took it so long ago that I do not remember my list
I think liberal Protestant and Unitarian were at the top along with Bahai. I was surprised that Catholic was so low for me since I thought that I preferred their doctrine of salvation. However, I took it again, and answered each question based on "what would the Pope think?" rather than "what do I think?" and I scored 100% Catholic. So I know what the Catholic church believes, but I do not believe it (at least according to that test).

Whoa!?! I will be sure to confess this surprise to my Parish Priest (with the web site so he can take the test himself). He's (Our Priest) is truly one of the keepers but it's a Roman Catholic (63%)Parish not Orthodox Quaker (100%) Church. Perhaps I have some rethinking to do and perhaps it's because I refrain to judge others Re: Abortion and Homosexuality. <warm smile and wink>

209. I've taken it several times
Liberal Quaker is always my top choice (and I do agree with them a LOT) and Unitarian Universalism is always a close second (I want to start attending a UU church near me, I just have a weird church phobia now after going to church with really judgemental people for a lot of years) and the two main types of Buddhism are always in the top five, which makes sense. I've studied Buddhism for about seven years (informally) and really agree with it. Very peaceful set of beliefs.

211. About this program's origin...
The questions, answers, compatibility values and the possible outcomes (religions) were researched and assembled by Lorie Anderson, researcher and wife of Curt Anderson, the owner of Selectsmart.com, a company that produces thousands of similar "selectors," the technical industry term for quiz engines. Examples of other selectors include "Which Harry Potter Character Are You?" and "Which Presidential Candidate Best Matches Your Views?" She spent the better part of a year researching all the religions included in Belief-O-Matic. Prior to this project, she had no special religious training. For her research, she used a combination of academic, Internet and faith-based sources. When she encountered differing interpretations of a religion, she says she favored the one accepted by a majority of the religion's followers.

After the Andersons designed their selector, they consulted religious professionals for accuracy and beta-tested the quiz on Selectsmart.com. They used comments from religious professionals and quiz-takers to refine their questions and answers.

"We're now around 30,000 people a day that come to the web site," Curt Anderson said of his site's steady rise in traffic. "When we put the Belief System Selector up, there was a considerable leap (in site visitors) right then."
