15. I know thats why I picked it hehe,
Heavy? No, not really. I just feel pathetic.

I have no job, no friends, no life really, just the computer.

I'm depressed because I'm 18 and I've never had a boyfriend, hell I've never been on a date!

I'm depressed because I don't know what I want to do with my life, and I feel like I'm letting people down because I don't know.

Everyone always asks me what am I doing, I never have anything to tell them. I've tried looking for a job, kind of, but its scary out there. I could go to school, but I don't know what I would do and I'm scared.

I just want a life, or something like one.

Well I guess I do have something heavy on my mind heh, well I feel a little bit better ranting.

P.S. do you think any of this has to do with the with fact its girly time? :P

42. that sucks feeling down like that, I was feeling much the same last week
preceding Auntie Flo, and everything can seem bleaker, believe me, you shouldn't get down on yourself for anything you mentioned, you are too young to put so much pressure on yourself, and believe me dating is not all it's cracked up to be, overrated in my opinion. I finally met "the" man for me, at age 32, after many hits and misses, but I may not have appreciated him as much if it wasn't for the long wait and the learning experiences along the way. 'course that's just me, but my point is things happen when they're meant to.

54. I've been you; it gets better
And then it gets worse. And then it gets better again for about three years. And then worse for two. And then really, really good for four years. And then just sort of not great but not bad for a long time.

:silly:

Seriously, though, it's okay to not know what you want. Fuck anybody who expects you to figure it out to please them or fit their expectations according to some timetable of when you "should" be ready to do something. You can take as long as you want.

I'm 38 and I'm not sure what I want to be when I grow up yet. I was almost 19 before I ever even had my first kiss, or my first date. As for figuring out what your next step is, try reading "What Color is My Parachute." Kinda dorky, but it gets you thinking.

Generalized or social anxiety disorder would be my guesses. Here's a great site that gives information on the diagnosis and treatment of many psychiatric disorders. http://www.mentalhealth.com

Also, you might want to post in the Mental Health Support Group we have here. I'm really sorry about that flippant remark I made earlier. I was just thinking about your poll.

29. A quote
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 01:21 AM by chookie
“Depression is just anger without enthusiasm. It’s an empty beer bottle with no one worth throwing it at.”

Worth pondering. Depression is a lot about anger turned inward. Yeah, there's all that stuff about pharmaceutical solutions and brain chemistry, but I suspect it is merely an evolutionary physical reaction to intense anger within a population group. You want to strangle someone because they are fucking IMPOSSIBLE, but this is not approved of in society, where we must be nice, so you take the knife or gun to yourself to punish yourself for your feelings, or, more typically, disengage yourself from feeling emotion entirely.

The pills save many lives, no doubt, and they have been a blessing. But, wrongly, they are prescribed for true grief, or existential unhappiness, or simply the consequences of thinking too clearly about how fucked up things have become.

I hope you're okay.

PS: another quote: "I don't get angry... I get ulcers." Woody Allen

43. I like those quotes very much :)
I agree with you on the drugs thing.

I think being depressed or sad, is just a normal thing sometimes, you cant be happy all the time. I also think, people are told they should be happy all the time and when they're not, they think something is horribly wrong, and run off to see if there is something wrong, and the people they run to are more then happy to give them pills and of course the drug companies are really happy to have yet another person pay a shit load of many for something they probably don't need. All this basically results in is an over medicated country. That is more fucked up then if they weren't on the 'happy pills' to began with.

Lots of stuff -- here's an excerpt

"As we enter the dark time of year, and perhaps one of the darkest times in modern history, we celebrate in the Judeo-Christian tradition, the coming of the light. Darkness has never been able to unequivocally obliterate it. All great traditions and spiritual teachers declare that human existence is largely comprised of adversity interspersed with moments of light, beauty, and joy.

They have also admonished us to remember that without suffering, there will never be transformation. The days of simply applying bandaids to America’s deplorably corrupt and unjust political, economic, and social institutions are over.

It appears that nothing less than total transformation is being demanded of us.

My wish for every American in 2005 is that we recover from our addiction to happiness—our refusal to hear, ponder, and struggle with “bad news”, and with informed, illumined minds and hearts, allow the darkness to be our teacher.

That very “un-American” path may be our only hope for creating a new world .
-snip-
As the psychologist Carl Jung noted “the foundation of all mental illness is the avoidance of legitimate suffering.”

rest at http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/BAK411C.html

PS: you're only *18* years old and you understand my points about the controversies of pharmaceutical solutions? You must be one hell of a gal. No wonder you feel like shit every now and then. Find a way to survive it, my dear -- we need more like you on our planet.

This can be another point in the book I want to write "America's addiction to happiness" I need lots of points of whats wrong with American (which are many), I mean I could just go with the election/Bush/Iraq thing but that gets tiresome after a while hehe so I can add this in, if I ever get the damn thing done! eeeeek lol

You were very lucky. Most humans, and especially most human parents, are too frightened to be honest, especially to their offspring. You certainly had a head start on most.

Please read the essay. It is not meant to terrify. It is meant simply as a plea for people to get real, come to grips with what has happened, and especially to understand that nothing we are experiencing today is novel -- all this bullshit has been lived through countless generations -- now its just our turn. That's not good news, but it is factual.

Even at your young age -- I think you are ready to understand the attraction of authoritarianism for so many other people. You and I are willing to take on the pain of thinking about things carefully, which is something THEY never experience, because they live in exact certitude of EVERYTHING; they never experience the mechanisms of the thought process (a higher primate function) -- they have a kneejerk, instinctual (or brainwashed) reaction to things. When populations like that get momentum -- time to get ready for crazy times.

*They* don't get depressed. They go and kill people, without any qualms. A very significant difference between authoritarians (i.e. extremist Republicans, Jihadists, doctor killers, etc) and We the Thinkers. There is probably a genetic basis for this shit....

Feeling pain, and anger, is NORMAL during these times. Being exhilarated and gleeful during times like these is ABNORMAL, psychopathic.

Just as individuals can be psychopathic, so can whole nations -- if injustice is not confronted.

My very best wishes to you, my dear -- you are a fine gal and we're lucky to have you. Hmmm -- maybe a Obama/Revolutionary Acts ticket in 2008....

71. You just reminded me of a quote,
"The most dangerous enemy to truth and freedom, the solid unmoving cattle of the majority."
-From Fahrenheit 451.

I was absolutely shocked out of my mind when I heard Ray Bradbury was Republican a few weeks ago. It's amazing to me that someone who seems to be such a free thinker, is a Republican. x(

It requires daily Vicks applications and hourly suppositories, but due to some back complications he can't do it himself, so he requires Dick Cheney's help.

Very rare.

Very awful.

But at least the Vick's Vaporub suppositories numb the pain he feels from his uncontrollable compulsion to seek anal penetration from antique doorknobs. (That's why he goes to Crawford so often, and to Camp David JUST as often.)

53. Feeling low is lousy; I hope you feel better.
You live in La Conner? I love it up there! (I'm in Seattle).
I know the weather is damp and crappy right now, but just a suggestion: bundle up and get out for a while to walk. It sounds cliche by now, but getting up and moving helps your mood. You get more oxygen into your system and it does the brain some good.
Take care, OK?
BTW, come back here on 12/23. It will be Festivus, and I'll start "The Airing of Grievances" thread. You might find it cathartic.
;-)
