My father's out of surgery--the triple bypass turned out to be a quadruple |
|
bypass. The next 24 hours are critical, but so far so good. He came to a little, seems to be able to move his arms and legs (there's always a concern with this type of surgery of some neurological damage, especially since he's 85). He may have to go to a nursing home for some rehab, but only short term. We were telling him that beforehand, and emphasizing "short term." He really doesn't want to go to one of those places, and can't say I blame him.

One of my grandpa's had a quadruple, the other had a triple, and my mom had a triple. It will be slow going for a while though.

they get in there and take a look around and some of the blood vessels, particularly behind the heart, have actually begun to calcify. Those kind are called "widowmakers" - they just crumble because they're no longer flexible.
It's much better to get the full quad in that case - "as long as you're in there. . .", and it's not a whole lot of extra work for the surgeon.

I used to take care of patients directly out of heart surgery. Be sure he keeps a little pillow to hold against his chest when he moves and coughs or laughs. He will heal much faster if he can do those things without pain. The more you can be there to encourage him as he recovers the quicker he will make it out of there. Good luck.
