Or possibly The Green Mile... Or Possibly Stand By Me...
Un fortunately, there have been more bad movies than good made from SK's works. I'm waiting for The Gunslinger miniseries.

the book, not the made for TV movie. Scared the pants off me. Come to think of it, The Shining (book not movie) also scared the pants off me. Carrie (the original) is the only movie that that has lived up to the book, IMHO.

"The Shining." I was in high school and wanted the book for my birthday. My dad was going to buy it until he opened to the first page and read the first words......
"Officious little prick."
He told me that he closed the book and put it back on the shelf. I guess it just wasn't my year. He got a sweater for me instead. LOL

9. The Stand. The Green Mile is a close second. |
|
I read the edited version, which I think was the original, when I was 15 or 16. Years later when the long version came out I read that too. A close second is the Green Mile. They also made an excellent film out of that book, too, which is kind of unusual.

I started reading it in 1995, and it simply gets better with each new release. The next one is supposed to be arriving in November. If you have not yet examined the series, I strongly urge you to do so.

My son is now reading King for the first time. He devoured the first 2 books of the Gunslinger this week-end, I'll go out tomorrow and get the other two. The fifth book is out in November, I think.

I was in my early 20's when I read this one, and I read far into the night. I got as far as Louis taking his dead son up to the burial ground, and then tried to sleep. That was one long night. I never did get to sleep and still carry that feeling of terror, reading that book, late at night, with my son who was the same age as Gage at the time sleeping in the next room. It haunted me for days, the thought of losing a child was so chillingly and heartbreakingly told in the story that I had horrible nightmares of what I would do if it happened to me. Second favorite would have to be Christine, since I was in high school and kind of an outsider at the time; I related to Arnie and was rooting for him till he went off the deep end. That's what I like about King; he takes normal believable characters that are easy to relate to and adds unimaginable human emotions.

43. Pet Semetary isn't his best book |
|
But it scared the snot out of me.
I used to have this elderly, obese, half-blind cat. When "Jack" didn't come home one night, I figured he'd crawled off to die (he WAS over 18 years old, which is ancient for a cat).
Flash forward almost a year...
I'm heavily pregnant, and have dozed off reading reading Pet Semetary.. suddenly, I wake up with a heavy weight on my chest, and a cat with one eye explaiming "Meow!" in my face...
Jack the Cat is back; neither my hubby nor I had the sense to block off the cat door. I screamed so loud that I woke up all the neighbors, my former husband, my widwife, the paramedics, and the Emergency Room staff at the local hospital.
It *could* exlain why my son is so strange.
BTW, Jack hung around for at least five more years.

I read the first 3/4 in one night at a friend's house. Farmhouse in the middle of the country. I kept seeing things in the windows out of the corner of my eye. Had to sleep in the same bed as her that night...
...seriously, we were just friends. I was really that scared.

after reading that one, yes it scared the crap out of me, I came downstairs in the middle of the night to get a drink and one of my kids helium balloons had lost enough helium to be below the top of the couch. As I went around the corner it floated up, I screamed some kind of horrible strangled sound and cleared the couch like it was a little bitty hurdle. I almost wet myself! I have never liked clowns, they terrified me as a kid and now they just totally creep me out. "We all float down here." Pennywise the Clown

... then "Stand by Me" and "Shawshank Redemption."
In "Needful Things" the intense enmity between the two pastors was, to me, a perfect illustration of the difference between religion and spirituality.
In "The Stand," though, I thought the "Hand of God" scene was really pretty corny.

It's one of his early Bachman books, and is by far the best thing he ever wrote. I would love to see it made into a movie, preferably by the same crew who did "Stand By Me". All too often his books are made cheaply into movies, or at least they come off that way. Going for the gore (which is what King himself too often does) undermines the very real strengths of the books.
For those of you who haven't read it, "The Long Walk" takes place in a future/alternative world in which 100 18 year old males start walking at the border of Canada and Maine, and keep walking, no rest stops at all, until only one is left. If a walker slows down below four miles per hour, he's removed from the walk. Permanently. It's very claustrophic, very dark, very good.

though "The Shining" is a great book. The movies both sucked, imo. "Carrie" was a good movie - and "The Green Mile" and "Shawshank Redemption" were as well. "Stand by Me" was too.
"The Stand" is one of his best.
I notice no one has listed "The Tommyknockers" which may have been the most tedious book I've ever finished reading.
My very favorite Stephen King book is "On Writing" which is a real gem on the craft of writing mingled with some autobiographical stuff.

was awful in my opinion. It is hard for me to keep any interest in a book where there are no good characters with no reedeming features. It has been a long time since I read it, I might attempt it again and see if I misjudged it but I remember being very disappointed in it. "On Writing" was a really fun read even though I am not even the slightest bit interested in becoming a writer.
After reading and posting on this thread last night I dreamed of Lobstrosities. Thankfully clowns were absent.
