that Riker changed his middle name to Thelonius after his "twin" took Thomas. Or something like that.

73. I feel really ambivalent towards Voyager.
I liked a lot of the characters and the actors that played them. I also think there are some really good episodes and quite a few entertaining ones.

But overall, I felt betrayed by the lack of continuity and lack of a sense of real change over time. I felt like they started with this great premise that potentially set up all of these great conflicts and story ideas---a group of people, some of whom were Starfleet, some Maquis (and some neither) were suddenly 70 years from Earth and had to work and live together every day as they tried to get back home. But it seemed to me that they basically dropped any sense of conflict between the characters after just a few episodes and, before that, they basically depicted the strained relationships as having to do solely with lack of trust. It seems like they could have delved a bit deeper.

In fact, it seemed like every time they came up some new element that would have made a good continuing storyline, they dropped it and forgot about it. The best example I can come up with is Chakotay and Janeway's relationship. We got basically a confession of love on his part, strong intimations of the same from her---minus her moonings over her fiancee whom she apparently expected to wait 70 years for her :eyes: ---all of which could have developed to be very interesting. I mean, they were the captain and first officer, he was the Maquis commander she was sent out to find, he had sacrificed his ship for hers, they were probably never going to make it home. Instead of exploring all of these things, the writers just dropped it and in the last episode, expected us to think that Janeway wanted to save Chakotay because of her guilt about Seven of Nine being a widow? It made no sense. And no, I don't think that the writers were implying that she had another motive at all. This is just one example, but one that particularly irritates me.

Basically, what it came down to for me was that I felt like, unlike DS9 (my favorite series), Voyager was constantly on the move. Therefore, they shouldn't have been trying to imitate DS9's success by coming up with "political" or long-term story arcs that had to do with outside forces. Instead, they should have been focusing on the psychological and social problems of being on a journey home that many of them would not survive, of being a generational ship, of trying to decide whether to go home or to settle somewhere, etc. I wouldn't have minded alien-of-the-week episodes if there was something deeper and richer in this area of the show.

Anyway, rant over. :)

81. Ok, I will accept a rant, but you have a few things messed up....
On the final Show, Janeway went back because SEVEN was killed and Chakotay was devastated... Seven was apparently killed in an away mission that would have happened like 7 or so years later...I liked the Idea of Seven and Chakotay.... But that is just me.

77. Nichelle Nichols kicked ass

The original series included women in outer space, but still playing their ho-hum subversive roles...secretary, switchboard operator, nurse, generic bimbo.

It always seemed to me that Nichols' character was the first to step away from that. She was mad as hell, and not going to take it anymore! She was sexy and tough. She'd seen it all and maintained her sense of humor in spite of it. She was a true heroine.
