How can people NOT like trees?!?!
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 11:30 AM by Coventina
Because of the fire at my complex yesterday, I have interacted more with my neighbors in the last 24 hours than in the previous 7 years put together!

Anyway, I come to find out that every single one that I happened to talk to WANTS TO CUT DOWN EVERY TREE IN THE COMPLEX!!!!!

:wtf:

Apparently trees are evil because 1) They drop leaves or needles or seeds or something. 2) Birds sit and/or nest in them. 3) They might get struck by lightening and/or blown down in a storm.

:wtf:

You know, it's sad, but because of this tragedy, I've gotten to know my neighbors, and now I hate them!!!

What the hell is wrong with people??????

on edit: thought I should make it clear---I live in a townhome complex, and these people are actively pressuring the homeowners' association to cut down every tree that is taller than the first story.

3. while we're on the subject
I never understood why "tree-hugger" was considered derogatory...i can think of a LOT less savory things to hug other than trees (which help us sustain life...how can you NOT love that?)

7. Actually they are Angry about the country and are forced to transfer
their anger to something other than the President and his policies, because it is not proper, nor allowed to criticize him.

before I even saw this thread! Trees must have some especially bad karma today, even though they didn't do anything to deserve it.

9. A favorite Emerson quote of mine-
To speak truly, few adult persons can see nature. Most persons do not see the sun. At least they have a very superficial seeing. The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood. His intercourse with heaven and earth, becomes part of his daily food. In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows. Nature says, he is my creature, and maugre all his impertinent griefs, he shall be glad with me.

I sure am sorry about your neighbors. That really sucks. How can you not love the trees???

10. Some people just find them too chewy ...
... and others don't like the sauces that are usually on offer ... not
a good reason in my opinion, you should always mix up your own sauce
rather than just buying a jar at the supermarket ...

(Sorry about that ... I seemed to be channelling Fred the Happy Beaver
for a few minutes there ...)

Seriously, I know what you mean: I love the trees in my back garden
(a silver birch and a maple) and can sit there in the Spring & Summer,
just watching the way the light changes as a breeze ripples through the
leaves. The Autumn brings such a range of rich colours - even if most
of them do end up dropping on the lawn - and even the Winter can't stop
them from being interesting ... mainly because it's easier to see the
birds and squirrels ...

If you find the bark too tough for your teeth, just tenderise it for
a few minutes before ... (bugger ... he's back again ...)

11. My neighbors want to cut down....
...a 1500 year old redwood. My information on this may be outdated, though, because I heard about it a few weeks ago and there was already the deadly blue swathe of paint on the trunk then.

When you live here, you get used to the size of them and it doesn't really awe you that much any more; they're actually kind of puny under the circumstances.

What the human mind simply cannot comprehend is how old they are, what they have seen come and go, what stories they would tell if they could talk.

14. Tree Spikes
Are not good for people that cut down trees, they damage the saws or they cause trouble in the sawmill. Please do not take any railroad spikes and drive them deep into older trees, that may be dangerous. Some people will post a notice on the tree that it has been spiked, and may not be a good idea to cut it down. So don't put spikes about 4' apart all the way up the tree, it is not good to do.
