What's The Proper Way To Pronounce "Loughran"?
There's a Loughran Road in my 'hood... and whenever I give verbal directions to people on how to get to my house, I always stumble over its proper pronunciation.

The streets in my neighborhood have a medieval theme to them... (Round Table Dr, Long Bow Rd, Lancelot Rd, Camelot Way, Moat Way, Mace Dr, Crossbow Dr, Friar Rd, Archery Dr... cute huh?) so I imagine that Loughran must be some famous town, region or knight that I'm unfamiliar with.

My best guesses would be:

LOO-ran
LOO-gran
LOW-ran (low rhyming with "toe")
LOW-ran (low rhyming with "cow")
LOG-ran
LUFF-ran

5. If it's a Gaelic word...
I think you have to make sort of a choking sound when you say the 'gh'.

7. I tried googling it myself... apparently I'm not as skilled as many.
My other option would be to knock on the door of a random house on Loughran Rd and ASK how they pronounce it. (But that would be a very odd thing to do, and it might alarm them.)

13. got one link, anyway
http://members.tripod.com/~musiclassical/perfL.html

search this page for "loughran, james", there's a classical musician who pronounces his name "LOCK run".

i'm happy to believe the other posters who mention the gaelic throat-clearing sound in place of the "CK".
