15. It's weird for me to think they weren't always zipcodes
Also, (sort of related) I'm always mystified in old movies when people give a phone number, and all they say is a name, and only a few numbers. What was that all about and when did they change it? :shrug:

16. That was back when most people didn't have their own phones.
So there were a lot fewer of them. I guess if you said to an operator in Kansas that you wanted to speak to someone at MUrray Hill9-9999, they knew you were calling New York somehow. There was a rhyme and reason to the exchange numbers that's become totally obscured now.
