Any fans of Japanese Horror Out There?
As a long time fan of suspense/horror cinema, I have long lamented the decline (indeed, the near death) of the genre. Yes, there have been some exceptions (I thought “The Sixth Sense” was fantastic), but most of what’s passing for American suspense-horror in the past decade or more has been pretty crappy in my opinion. Movies like “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” seem more like episodes of “Dawson’s Creek” with slashers to me. Too polished, to formulaic.

Well, I was recently introduced to Japanese horror through the terrifying film, “Ju-On: The Grudge.” This film along with “Ringu” are outstanding examples of Japanese horror. The Japanese influence is having a pretty big impact on American horror—as evidenced by the Hollywood remakes of both of these films (“The Ring” and “The Grudge”).

Anyway, if you are a fan of horror and you haven’t yet discovered Japanese horror, here are three films you must check out!

Ju-On: The Grudge
Ringu
The Eye

Here’s a brief article on “J-Horror.”

1. I liked Ringu
It was scary. I didn't find Ju-On scary at all and The Eye is from China or Taiwan. But yeah, they have some scary ass movies. I like horror stories from other cultures because they tend to be more terrifying than American horror stories.

2. I didn't see either Japanese version, but I thought "The Ring" and
"The Grudge" (U.S. versions) were both good. They were the last two movies to scare me, and almost nothing scares me. (scared in a creeped-out way, not terrified)

7. You forgot the Tomie movies
I'm addicted to them! I've seen the first 3.
There are 2 others I've seen, but can't remember their names. One is about a girl (a video game designer)who finds out she has inherited a house from a famous painter (her father) and creepy things happen in the house. The other one is similar to the eye, girl tells psychiatrist she sees things, etc.

12. They are a bit of a challenge
There's alot of reading between the lines in the first one. The second one, I think, is the best.
