Welcome to DUville, pop. 60,026
Our rapidly growing community has just crossed over the 60,000 mark. So, what facilities should we have?

A mall? (Wal-Mart will, of course, be about thirty feet outside the DUville corporate limits :P ) TV and radio stations? (Sinclair and Clear Channel need not apply :-) ) A decent bus system? Amtrak, or perhaps a small airport? A small liberal arts college? Minor league baseball (class A) and/or hockey (ECHL)? A swinging pedestrian-friendly downtown centered around historic Skinner Square?

Who are our major employers? The "liberal media"? "Liberal academia"? </sarcasm>

15. Excellent idea. Perhaps we could add some enclosed skywalks
like those in downtown Minneapolis, seeing as how the weather in (most of) DUville is not exactly conducive to outdoor strolling this time of year. :-)

29. Exactly---no strip malls and parking lots
The community will be built like a small city, with the shops built on the sidewalk, with loft apartments overhead.
Downtown will be full of buisnesses within walking distance and nice luxury condos, and small squares for picnics and sports

20. I think DUville should be contstructed in a new urbanist fashion
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 04:25 PM by Zuni
That means it will look like a small city rather than a suburb and will be pedestrian friendly
I think we should have one of those nice movie theaters, an arboreteum, a community college, a town hall for community meetings, and a super huge discount book warehouse. Lots of resturaunts (especially greek, Italian and Chinese ones. mmmmmm :9
No chain stores or resturaunts--all locally owned small buisness

Yes, downtown should be around a park with a statue.

41. Actually, the one in my home town was very small
so no dome, but a few pillars in front. It definitely looked like a government building, though -- a place where you kept your voice down and were respectful.

42. I think we need a bakery/coffee shop definitely,
with books and comfy chairs/ to sit in and a big table in the back where the "regulars" hang out to plot the overthrow of the US ofBush.

Since I am a way above average baker I could probably supply some sweets.

Would we want it to have cafe food for lunch too..like soup and chicken salad sandwiches, and pretty salads?

Or just be a coffee bar/sweets hangout? Like Starbucks but with better coffee and independent.

48. Thanks Zuni
I lurked here for a looong time before I finally jumped in and registered. I think I found DU via Bartcop back a couple of years ago. Bartcop, DU, Common Dreams and Air America - especially Mike Malloy - help me to realize that all is not completely lost. It also helps living in good old blue NYC.

Back at you Zuni
