2. great poll , other suggestions
Dracula's Daughter, 1936- very subtle evocation of lesbianism, and the sheer weariness of living several lifetimes. very moody

Was The Old Dark House universal (it was James Whale)

The spanish language Dracula is a much better flick than the english language one- much more passionate, edgy...

The Cat and the Canary... 1927

and The Bride of Frankenstein- poignant, humorous... although the original frankenstein is a great one.

imho

long live Famous Monsters of Filmland

4. Another Universal "essential"...
..."The Raven," with Karloff and Lugosi, not included because it wasn't a "monster" movie...

BUT...in terms of atmosphere and perhaps the most chilling, psychotic performance of Lugosi's career, a "must-have" item for fans of this genre.

Now that Universal has reissued the "monsters" on DVD (all except for Claude Rains' "Phantom of the Opera"), hopefully they will get to "The Raven" next year.

8. Will do, thanks for pointing it out
I have a pretty extensive collection...all of the Universal, most of the Hammer Studios, all of the "Golden Turkey" stuff like the Ed Wood films, Robot Monster, etc., a few of the Twilight Zone DVDs, Vincent Price essentials like House of Wax, The Tingler and Masque of the Red Death, Robert Mitchum "noir" chillers like Cape Fear and Night of the Hunter, "Saturday Afternoon" stuff like Tarantula, The Amazing Colossal Man, War of the Colossal Beast and The Mole People...even Zsa Zsa Gabor's 1958 classic "Queen of Outer Space," which featured her uttering the immortal line "I HATE zat Kveen"...the movie is billed on the back of the box as "an interplanetary battle of the sexes"...indeed.

As the saying goes, these films are "The Glorious Results of My Misspent Youth"...
