Can't remove program, can't make it work either - HELP!
Something with batshitty with my copy of The Bat! on my desktop (win XP). When I tried to uninstall it with the add/remove programs app., it gave an error. So I tried installing the newer version of the Bat! over the old one (which is how The Bat! is set up to be updated). That worked just fine, but when I run the program, I'm still getting the "windows encountered a problem and needs close" message, and then it closes down.

So then, I thought, "Well, it's already fucked up", so I just deleted the whole The Bat! folder, and then installed it again. And like before, installation went fine, then "error" and close down.

I don't know why it's doing this. I hadn't tried to anything interesting to the oprogram or the files or directory or anything. It just started doing it.

I'm assuming it's a registry problem, because even after deleting the folder and installing new, my old email folders showed up again in the tree.

but am not courageous enough or knowledgable enough to go in and try to sort it out without some help from the experts first.

I have no idea what the hell is happening. Never encountered a problem like this before.

Thanks in advance!

2. If it were me, I'd completly uninstall the program "The Bat"
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 06:21 PM by BlueJazz
First..make sure the program isn't running
Do a "msconfig" thing (start, Run, type msconfig...look at startup programs ...uncheck all....restart.

Do a search of your hard drive for "Bat" (not the File Name but the option "a word or phrase in the file"

Do a Registry search..( start, run,REGEDIT and go to "EDIT.."FIND"..type in BAT and delete anything that has THE BAT in it....also do a search & REGEDIT for the name of the company that makes "the Bat" ...delete it.

Reinstall "The Bat"

4. So I'll be totally safe to delete any registry pertaining to the bat?
That's what I wasn't sure of - registries make me nervous; I never know how they might be cascaded and linked together somehow.

if you're sure I'm good to delete them all, I'll go ahead and do that. I figured that was the solution. Good to have your confidence backing me up.

:-)

5. I wouldn't worry about it...
Just make sure that it's the program and not something like BATtery.
Windowas Xp is pretty forgiving about deleting important system registry stuff. (it will just replace them)

Of course, if you don't go overboard.
But..you've always seemed like a smart person, to me.
(besides...I think Clapton is over-rated also) :)

6. Thanks! Worked like a charm!!
Picture perfect easy it was.

Thanks again for the help, and for the reassurance that it's okay to go dig around registry files. :-)

8. Did you download the new service pak?
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 08:30 PM by Poppyseedman
There is a great radio show on in my area for computers fixes.

970 WFLA Sunday mornings. They have a live streaming audio.

One of the biggest problems right now, according to the radio guy, is the new Microsoft service pak, it's got some serious compatibility issues.

If that is the case, email Microsoft.
