18. Here's what one site says:
"This is the story I've been told. 25 refers to the chemical compound of LSD (LSD-25) that produces the psychedelic pharmaceutical effect. 6 to 4 refers to the duration of a typical "acid trip" one would experience if the drug were taken at 6PM after a preparatory meal. That's the story I've been told and it seems to be consistent with the lyrics of the song: "...should I try to do some more 25 or 6 to 4" "

of course, Straight Dope has an entirely different look at the lyrics:

31. Oh puleeze - you know who they are - they are one of the best
duos of writing talent in music history. Mick Jones did the arranging while Joe Strummer passed off beat poetry as punk rock lyrics - - need I go on? You erred, admit it :P

Although I could tell you about show tunes 'til you puked. (Or I did, which wouldn't take long. I hate show tunes, but my mother raised me on 'em.)

Did Strummer & Jones write anything else I would know? Who else recorded them? Enquiring minds want to know!

I can't remember the name of the song but
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 06:19 PM by itzamirakul
I can never forget part of the lyrics. The song is from the 1950s and I don't even remember who sang it. It was a rythm and blues song.

SHE: (Sung)You ought to be out in the forest -
Fighting a great big grizzly bear...

HE: (Spoken)Why ain't you out in the forest?

SHE: (Spoken) I'm a lady....

HE: (Sung) They got laaaa-dddy bears out there....

Note: I know its corny but I love those lines. They still make me laugh.

19. WOW! What a great site!
Thanks SO much for the link. I have been trying to remember the name of that song for 50 years now and everyone that I knew who would have known it has either died or is senile. :) So your help was wonderful! I wonder if there is anyplace to buy old songs like that only on cassette or on cd's.

I can't help but wonder...how did you know exactly where to find those lyrics?

What about pop tunes? Is there a site for them also? There is one other song I am seeking and i think it was sung by Nancy Wilson. I think the period was around the 1970s. I remember that the title was "Ten Good Years", but I went to Colony Records in NYC and even looked in their catalog but I couldn't find any record of such a song. I remember that it was on an lp album.
Any suggestions on this one?

27. I used the lines you remembered
and simply googled them. That's how I find a lot of stuff on google. It's an amazing search engine.

I would google what you remember about the songs you want to look up--usually about seven or eight words, perferably one or two lines, should do the trick. I've found some really obscure things online with less than that.

I don't know Colony Records, but Tower Records usually has a good catalog. And don't leave out Amazon in your search either.

11. "Brides of Jesus."
Matthew stood by the wall and watched his love below
Her pale hair came in golden rings down below her shoulders
As she waved and slowly turned around
To find the path that led her to the ancient gate was closed

She said Matthew why won't you tell me what it is you see
Your smile so wide this figured grin
You look as if, you look as if you're looking right through me
Why won't you tell me how it is you see
Through the darness all around me

No amulets or chains will work to keep the demons from
Or hide the night filled eyes from the brides of Jesus
The brides of Jesus
The brides of Jesus
Keep them over me

Keep them over me, can't you see
On tender-hooks and to be pleasure bent
His voice it scratched the air
May bring you so much sorrow
That you may be entertaining angels unawares

15. "Lumberlung"
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 06:26 PM by crispini
A breath of whiskey on my cotton shirt
Turn on the fan, take off your skirt
Lay here beside me on these sheets so stained
For a little while, but it ain't the same

And she brings me water and it always tastes so good
She brings me flowers from the woods
Stays here in this house with me when I know she'd rather leave
Stays with me as I sleep
And she helps me nurse my lumberlung
But it's no longer fun
For her

Once I dreamed we'd took a roadtrip, just me and her
Through the southern and midwest states
Turned north just south of Arkansas and we headed up
Towards the vast Great Lakes
And I thought I'd sleep through Texas, but I woke up in Illinois
And the car in the lane next to me was driven by a little boy
And he flashed a smile at me then he drove straight off the road
Smacked an overpass, I watched his car explode
And when she wakes me from my delirium
I know I'm no longer fun
For her

And she brings me water and it always tastes so good
She brings me flowers from the woods
Stays here in this house with me when I know she'd rather leave
Stays with me constantly
And she helps me nurse my lumberlung
But it's no longer fun
For her
