Formerly good bands that ended up sucking: |
|
The first one that springs to mind is "Chicago", aka "Chicago Transit Authority".
Also Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (aka OMD)...

From both my own deep personal pain and broader standards of rock/pop goodness, it will be hard for anyone to ever fall that far again, IMO.
Maybe if U2 became Ashlee Simpson's band or sumptin'....

Their first four albums were mas excellente. Then they decided to try for a more radio friendly sound and wound up screwing the pooch.

Real great band right up to "The Return Of Saturn". Hell, I'd say that was their best album.
...after that album...they just...something happened. And they sucked. HARD.

they should have never regrouped after "Seventh Sojourn" (which IMHO blew in comparison to the earlier 6 albums)
Also Echo and the Bunnymen, the Psychedelic Furs, the Bangles, the Cure, Gang of Four, the Buzzcocks, well pretty much any band ends up sucking after awhile...gotta pay off those debts you know!

This doesn't really count, but I can't believe that they even tried to release an album without Morrison.
Other than that, I'd have to agree with the Jefferson Airplane.

Bands have years to rwrite their first album while they're growing in popularity, then have to start churning them out quicker when the popularity hits.
Most bands have three good recordings in them.

22. Yeah, definitely Chicago after Terry Kath died. |
|
Van Halen was great, Van Hagar sucked and that an abortion of an album with Cherone was even worse.
Deep Purple without BOTH Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore present.
REM since Bill Berry left (shocking that the drummer would be the key to that band's chemistry)
The David Gilmour solo band posing as "Pink Floyd" has written only one decent song - "On the Turning Away"
Anything Rod Stewart has done since the Faces broke up.

It hurts.
Townshend is now the worse thing an artist can be -- irrelevant.
That being said, most of 'em suck now. Dinosaurs. Fossils. I heard punks say it long before this --since 2000 I have had the apotheosis of this truth....
(But Neil Young, the soundtrack to "Dead Man" is one of the all time greats -- there's still a lot of art there; this guy may still "got it" after all these crazy years.)
but ha ha these days I am listening to Eminem and rap when it comes to "pop" music, because these seem to be the only really relevant artists out there.

The same goes for Phil Collins. He was great in Genesis but solo he's along the same lines as Rod Stewart.

Yeah, he was great once. For a while. Once in touch with pain.
Absolutely can't fucking stand him any more....vacuous, meaningless.
I guess they made so much money that they don't have any real friends any more to tell them to get real or hang it up. The infamous Fat Elvis Syndrome -- just clueless sycophants to advise you.
Rod -- I'm a friend: Hang it up.
I know that some of these dinos have people they need to support -- a lot of them got really rotten deals by piratical record producers -- they have to work because they never made real cash in the first place when they were relevant as artists, and can only hope to make it up in their artistic dotage by doing the nostalgia circuit.
Bizarre -- since relocating to PA and kinda sorta monitoring public events -- when you look at "HOT SUMMER CONCERT TOURS!!" here, most of 'em are pathetic nostalgia acts. I did everything I could back then to see 'em, but now -- can't be bothered.

That's the biggest example I can think of. Never has a band rocked so hard and ended up sucking so bad.
X blew pretty hard once Billy Zoom left.
REM went into a really steep decline after Murmur.
And let us not forget the Clash. They went from a band that could explain their viewpoint in three minutes to one that needed thirty.
