My buddy Doug is a true friend! |
|
Yesterday morning, I go to start my car so I can drive to work. But the battery's dead. I pull my booster pack out of the trunk to give the battery a jump, but still nothing happens when I turn the key. So I'm 12 miles from work, nowhere near a bus line, and my car needs a new battery.
Desperate, I call Doug, an old buddy of mine who lives about ten minutes away. Not only does Doug drive me to work, but while I'm there, he goes to an auto parts shop, picks up a new battery, drives back to my house, and installs it for me! Later that day, when I knock off from work, Doug returns to my workplace and gives me a ride home. And what does he ask in return? Only the cost of the battery. Doug didn't even take me up on my offer to slip him a few bucks for his gas and his time.
On those occasions when I'm tempted to fret about what's imperfect in my life, I'll try to remember that my life includes people like Doug, who are not only willing but even glad to help me out when I need it the most. That's worth more to me than any amount of money will ever be!

Thank you for reminding me of the importance of caring people in our lives, so often we (me) forget. You too must be a good friend to have such a friend as Doug, it goes both ways.
:yourock: and so does DOUG.

2. Friends like Doug are few and far between |
|
count your blessing and be grateful. So seldom in our lives we find a *Doug*. I have a friend or two like that. In a day when there are more takers and givers, it's it refreshing to know we have a friend like that.

hadn't lived in my house more than a year but had managed to get to know him when my son befriended his son (we moved into a new county and school district). Lo and behold, the 12 year old Camry dies on me going to work. Ronnie's a wrecker driver, so I gave him a call to ask where close to my new home I should take the car to. Not only did he arrange for a free tow (it's very expensive in and around Houston) he picks me up and delivers me to work. At the end of the day, he shows up in his Explorer, drives me home and hands me the keys to it telling me to use it as long as I need to, which turned out to be 4 days. He wouldn't accept any money. To attempt to repay him, I cooked my melt-in-your-mouth baby back ribs on the grill, bought a 12-pack and baked a cheese cake. We sat around all day that Sunday, drinking, eating and watching football.
It's comforting to know that there are still some decent and caring people in the world.

4. I have a friend like that too |

We mutually do stuff like that for each other. Both of us live far away from our families unlike most of the people who live around here. It is good to have friends that are like family.

"Doug" used to be our code for burnin' one. So a lot of my friends know "Doug" well.
