10. What the hell is 'Irish' doing on that list?

Take it from someone who knows, an Irish-Italian who has for years eaten the food of both cultures... Unless this is a gag, Irish shouldn't even been an option. Italian is THE best food around - there are many good types, but I just don't see how they could match the Italian passion for food and flavor.

A few examples:

Italian: Sausage tortellini with Marinara, olives and Parmesan.

German: Wienerschnitzel.

Chinese: Mongolian Beef.

Indian: Chicken Tandoori.

Greek: Beef and lamb gyros with hummus, tapouli and salad.

Mexican: Enchiladas Mole.

English (yes, that's right, English): Fish and chips with malt vinegar.

French: Duck a L'Orange.

Thai: Chicken Sateh with raw vegetables in sweet vinegar.

American: Pepper steak with garlic mashed potatos and broiled asparagus.

Turkish: Lamb kebabs in pita bread with spicy sauce.

African: Roasted goat meat in fried yellow rice.

30. Great Ethnic Food Stats Story

Yeah, i know, statistics. (Everyone rolls eyes, on cue.)

Some folks i know at ORC did a survey about 10 years ago where the goal was to determine the America's favorite ethnic foods. It was a very comprehensive study that not only looked at types of foods but individual dishes.

Well, at the end of the survey, they found that people had not picked spaghetti, macaroni, burritos, tacos, pizza, or even lasagna in the top 10! (There were others too, but i don't remember all of them.)

They went back on the follow up survey to ask why people didn't pick these common ethnic dishes. The most common response was that people didn't think of these at ethnic dishes, they thought of them as American food.

So, who says pluralism isn't a good thing. People don't even think of spaghetti as italian food anymore!

My late grandmother might have been the best cook I've ever known. Now that I look back on it, I remember waking up in the morning, and she'd already be preparing for that night's dinner. I think those efforts she made drove her slowly insane over the years, but damn... I don't think I'll ever find a better gravy.
