REALLY stupid ad!
The United Methodist church has an ad out I just saw on the Weather Channel.

First off, why does a CHURCH need to have an ad on TV?

But the ad shows a woman going from one home to another dropping off anonymous gift-wrapped packages, and when she gets home, there's an anonymous gift-wrapped package for her.

Yeah. Someone anonymous has left a gift-wrapped package at my front door, I'll just pick it up.
Right. Sure.

No, I'll call the bomb squad first.

1. Not as bad as the Coal Industry front group ads on CNN
How we have a 250 year supply... virtually unlimited.... clean...

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Yeah, clean as a whistle... When I see it I want to smash my TV into microscopic fragments.

3. You got it.
This energy company here in this area called "WE" wants to build THREE coal-fired power plants around here.

Well, at a meeting of local residents, the WE execs got more than an earful.
They do NOT want those things upwind of them.

And I am already dreading the start of "smear season," with political ads coming out the yin-yang in a only a few months.

6. The best thing about "WE" is that it stands for
"We energies."

Say that out loud a couple of times, fast. Let the two "e"s flow into one....

8. It is clean
Just as long as you surround it with about a billion dollars worth of pollution-control equipment. Actually, come to think of it, that's probably a much better use of a billion dollars than anything we've done in Iraq so far.

2. You're not supposed to take it literally. It's a metaphor for...
"...sharing her gifts with others." (But you already knew that.)

You're right, though. It seems slimy for churches to advertise. Makes you wonder if the UM collection plates aren't quite heavy enough to satisfy upper management.

9. Ah, yes! The hidden metaphor!
She's running around giving everyone herpes, which is why she needs to go to church. "Repent, whore!"

Brilliant, Archae! :D

7. I'm an atheist but...
I actually appreciate ads like this, as well as those from the Mormons that promote kindness to others. These ads provide a very rare positive humanistic message on TV. I hope they serve to counteract the ME ME ME and SCREW YOU messages that permeate the airwaves. If it also gets more people to show up at their churches or send in money, that's fine with me.
