Never...Ever let my son near your car

So a few weeks ago, he's in an accident in his fiancee's car..car is totaled, he's hurt a bit..

Last week, his VW beetle died on the 57 freeway (near LA)..we had to go get him and tow it to the shop...

3 days ago, he gets it back from the shop, and it had a "minor fire"..(covered by the warranty on the work the mehanics did last week..


he borrows MY car, and we get a call last night at 8 pm.. The car has "quit running" and is under the 215 underpass at the 74 highway, could we come and get him??

7. I'm a little startled

that you lent him your car after all that went before. Is he old enough to rent one himself? Taking public transportation, riding a bike, or depending on friends might serve as some kind of useful lesson.

I've already told my 16 year old son, who's still learning to drive (he's required to drive on a permit only for a full year before I'll okay him getting a license) that the first time he has an accident he's not driving for several months. I think it's making him much more careful. And I'm always with him.

It's a sheer coincidence that all these rickety cars are breaking down under him....

I say this as a person who when younger also 'just happened' to have a lot of rickety cars break down while I was driving them. There's absolutely no relationship to my driving them to beyond the limits that their more cautious owners did, naturally. At least that's what I was stuck with telling people....

He's a cautious kid.. He did not even drive until he was a senior in HS.. We would not allow him to work , and could not afford the insurance for him to drive..

He's the level-headed one of my 3 sons :)

My ex had a SuperBeetle and a Campmobile - both had engine fires that weren't directly his fault. The Volvo that had an engine fire on the highway during rush hour? That was his fault.

19. when i was a teen

i trashed every single car the folks let me drive.

i burned out a fiero engine.
i trashed the oil pan of the mitsubishi roadster.
i put a big dent in the new yorker.
i blew out the gears in the rabbit.

then i turned 17.

i always felt so bad, and never understood why cars kept falling part when i was in them. i think my parents thought i was cursed too, but they had the sense to explain to me why i had f*cked up the car and how to avoid doing so, and ways that i could change my driving habits to avoid mistakes.
