1. Better than them asking you to take a cut.
Congratulations! Even small victories are victories.

6. heh - thanks
Good to know how much to donate back. I'm married, though, and am actually only paid for 35 hours/week. All glory to private schools! :grr:

8. I'll let you do the calc
You made off alot better since you are married though - probably around 150 or so. You probably pay for in SS/Medicare than Federal Income Taxes then.

Private schools paying $12/Hour is pretty lame.

9. lame perhaps
but not terribly uncommon. Private schools pay quite a bit less than public on average.

24. starting pay in the APS
is $36k plus. That's not too shabby - not enough, imho, for what public school teachers do, but not too shabby.

7. this is after two layoffs
of six and nine months. The raise *is* nice and I really shouldn't grouse, but damn. My wife and I spent our day yesterday making abacuses (abaci?) which were a huge hit and will be worth their weight in gold in class over the next several weeks, but unpaid time and materials...ah well...

11. Maybe you need to 'sell' the abacuses (abaci?) to the parents
for the cost of the materials at least, if the kids want to take them home to show their great skills at the abacus to their parents? I am guessing you are teaching?

15. that's a thought, actually.
I'd need to polish my woodworking skills (and the abaci) though - besides, the parents are already paying $5k per year tuition plus a couple hundred in incidentals.

10. Great! Can you get into the public school system?
Or don't you want to? That is cool if not, but you would make more money there.

13. I tried this spring
I was "initially accepted" to an Atlanta Public Schools alternative certification program (haven't gotten my stupid cert yet) that puts people into underpriviledged schools for two years. They strung us along for a month before announcing that they couldn't offer me a position. I suspect the program ran out of money.

I'm working on my application to Georgia State's cert program now. Hopefully, public school soon enough.

Evidently, a sentient carrot could have done as good a job as the math teacher they had last year, though...

Of course voucher-nonsense isn't an issue at this level. Just a lot of head-banging over what they've apparently failed to learn.

28. ROFL
It's a Christian school. I doubt that the ass is it. :D

I do have to say, though, that they break a few stereotypes. The owner/headmistress/whatever vocally dislikes Bill Clinton for the Monica thing and I take that to mean that she's a Republican, but it's not a white flight and/or fundie school like more than a few private schools in metro Atlanta. The student body is pretty evenly white/African-American/Latino, and includes quite a few Catholic kids. We don't get to do Halloween - which completely sucks, as celebrating "autumn" isn't a complete substitute - but that's not by admin preference.

I don't get one until January. And if the cost of living keeps going up, it won't even cover the cost of my cigarettes.
