Really good home remedies for Winter Dry Skin?
I'm so itchy and dry this time of year I've got so many scratches that it looks like I got locked in a box with an angry badger. Help!!

1. I use a humidifier in the winter.
It keeps me, and the cats, happy.

Of course, there's all that sediment that builds up...

7. Olive oil soap worked for me.
Try a bar for a buck or two from a Greek food specialty store.

And the earthy smell is heaven!

8. the best cream I have ever used:
It is NOT for dry skin, but it is amazing:
http://store.yahoo.com/wecarepharmacy/alve2proibyc.html

I have severe dry skin in the winter especially, and that stuff even made my skin smooth when I was flaking apart from tropical sunburn. Just don't let anyone poke around in your medicine cabinet and read the recommended uses.

10. I get it bad this time of year too...
Not as bad as in years past when without notice I'd sometimes scratch until I bled...Usually from the knees on down...The only remedy that really worked for me was smearing the itchy spots with vaseline...Primitive but it worked...!

When the indoors heat came on this winter I noticed the dry itchiness starting again so I rubbed the affected areas with Listerine and that has also really helped...For some reason Listerine (maybe because of the eucalyptus oil it contains) works well against skin disorders like seborrhea and eczema...

11. I have that too! Glad to know I ain't a reptile or something!
thanks for the tips. I may try the Bag Balm first, though. If that doesn't work, then I will try the listerine...

12. Eucerin lotion. It's thick and gooey.
When I was a kid my hands would get extremely dry and cracked, and sometimes they would even bleed. My mom put Vaseline on them and covered them with socks before bed. Next morning they were back to normal. I do this now for my daughter.

20. I like their products
I've tried a gazillion things and most everything else just irritates my skin. Burt's Bees is terrific for moisturizing.

Aveda makes a plant based oil called Calming Nutrients that is really good but pretty expensive.

Getting them to clean the ducts would happen just the other side of Bush admitting he made a mistake, and God knows that isn't gonna happen.

23. Bummer.. then put some cheescloth over the ducts....
It traps the dust from the furnace which also dries out the air....

Remember the skit on Saturday Night Live when Mike Meyers was middle age man, the guy who knew a lot of usually useless stuff??????

Try it, it worked for us.....

21. I learned this from my granny
She had gorgeous skin.

At night, you slather Vaseline all over your body. Wear sweats or something you don't really care about to bed, and when you wake up, your skin's like velvet.

Do this as often as you can - not every night, if you don't feel like it - and you'll never itch again.

A good friend of mine, who's a dermatologist to the stars, told me my granny knew what she was talking about. Vaseline's one of the best moisturizers you can use.

22. I mix olive oil with water and put it on in the shower and rinse lightly
the olive oil is good for your skin as compared to some of the other oils. I mix a little olive oil with a lot of water and pour it all over. You have to keep it shaken as you use it coz oil and water don't mix. Also you can have a mazola party with your sig. other using the olive oil, heated.
this is for really really bad dry skin. (except the mazolla party which is good for any skin;-)

27. Aveeno bath bars and ....
Aveeno colloidal oatmeal lotions. Also I second Eucerin as good and non-irritating for facial skin.

28. I take Evening Primrose Oil
1000 mg 2x day, and Fish Oil (purified) 2 x 1000mg day. That's what I found I needed, you may need less or more; everyone is different. And I use a cold mist humidifer to keep some moisture in my home as I live in a very dry climate.

All I need then is a light moisturizer (I used to have very dry skin and just pile moisturizer on). Moisturizing from the inside out is the best way to go. Right now it's -25 out and my skin is smooth.

The EPO also helps with PMS and cramps.

The coconut oil is good too, however it's best to start slow, as it can give you the runs if you start out with too high a dose.

30. Oatmeal bath helps
Use Aveeno or like product in your bathwater and it will really help with the itching.
For soaps I use:
Kiss My Face Olive Oil Soap for showering

Clearly Natural Glycerine (unscented) Soap for hands

Really, try to use the natural type soaps that are unscented. So many commercial soaps use ingredients that are drying, especially the fragrances.

You have my sympathy
