I think the laser pointer gets the most use and instant attention. Jesco has been known to climb walls to get the red dot.

I once had a cat that would play with that lid until she lost it under the stove or was frothing with excitement.

26. our cats love that too
I had one cat (years ago) that would play with it for hours, when it got "dirty" he would drop it in his water bowl, paw at it for a few minutes, then scoop it out and continue to play

of our current brood -- the 3 year old (Pookha) drags the bathroom sink plug around the house -- we've tried "anchoring" it and attaching it to sink but she manages to get it loose

the big boy (20lb+ Gato) goes bonkers over the laser light toy -- and no he's not fat -- really -- he's just one humoungus cat -- all muscle and an avid catnip eater

8. Plastic milk rings and......
...wax paper balls.

Latest discovery : Sometimes when you get a package there is a flat plastic tie type thingie that is wrapped around the outside of the carton to make sure the cardboard holds together. My cats love this thing so when we came across a particularly long one I tied it to the banister knob so the two ends dangle. They are still in absolute bliss over this thing.

They haven't paid that much attention to any cat toy I have ever paid for :)

12. plastic wrap, plastic shopping bags
seriously, I think my cats are addicted to a chemical in them. They can smell them through ANYTHING.

Once they find them, they start chewing and licking them, until they're shreds. If you try to wrestle them away, they get mad.

I guess I got two junkies living with me-- both cats.

40. here's another. Cardboard boxes they can jump in and then you
move the cardboard boxes around while they are in them. Or you move a pencil over the top of the box and the cat tries to grab it while he's inside the box. Or one cat jumps in the box and the cat outside the box attacks. There's all kinds of things for cats with cardboard boxes

...would go berserk if we put a piece of string or yarn under the box, got him to jump in, and then pulled on one end of the string so he could hear it passing beneath the cardboard. Oy! Frantic digging at the bottom of the box to get the "thing."

21. My little dog is obsessed with my mom's mouthguards
My mom wears a mouthguard at night so that she doesn't grind her teeth. For some reason, our dog Stanzy became obsessed with them. She tries to take it out of mom's mouth when mom is asleep, she prowls through the bedroom hunting for them, and has managed to open the bedside drawers to snatch them. So far, she has chewed up and destroyed four mouthguards, which comes to almost $75 worth of damage. She's not normally a destructive animal at all, so this is just bizarre.

I hope you won't punish me for citing the proclivities of a dog. I don't have a cat.

30. A bag of bows
My calico, Urd, loves to chew on bows. Last xmas I had gathered up all the bows from presents, plus a huge bag I'd bought for like a buck and hadn't used, and put them all in a shopping bag. Urd immediately began taking bows out of the bag (with her mouth). When I cleaned them up again and tried to put the bag in the closet, she was distraught and kept meowing at the closet door. I had to bring them back out and let her have them. That bag has been in the corner of the room all year...Urd pokes around in the bag almost every morning (with her head in the bows) and chooses her bow for the day; sometimes puts one back and gets another. It's the cutest thing. :)

34. Ice cubes, foil balls, fuzzy balls, furry mice, stuffed animals, snakes,
Da Bird, and anything on a string. Each cat seems to like something different. Monet comes running whenever she hears the ice dispenser. Alex meows while carrying an old stuffed animal (Tigger or Eyeore - we can always tell by his meow that he's carrying one of the two). Watson likes the furry mice that make noise when you shake them. He'll even fetch these if we throw them. He also loves Da Bird - so much that he killed it. Cairo likes snakes. I was in another room when one of my kids called for me to come quickly to the kitchen because Cairo had a snake dangling from his mouth. It was a baby Kingsnake, about 3 inches long (it survived :-)). Almost all love to chase/bat fuzzy or foil balls, and anything associated with a string.

I never thought about plastic jacks. I bet some of mine would play with those.

36. milk carton tops and goose feathers. when the geese molt, I pick
up their feathers and the cats go crazy when I wave those feathers in their faces. They also like cloth cords which they chase around when we play. You never really have to spend money separately for cat toys. I have found when I buy store-bought toys they like them a lot less than the free ones like the goose feathers and milk jug covers.

I played with the metal jacks when I was a kid; supposedly those were "too dangerous," so they don't sell them anymore. You can find the plastic ones everywhere, even at the grocery store.

47. on Thanksgiving...
...we had a lot of fun with a stray raw cranberry on the floor and one frisky black cat. It rattled as it rolled on the hardwood floor and there was a lot of hilarity. Then it rolled under the piano, though. I hate to think what all is under that piano.

My Chessie used to love the stretchy glittery gold or silver cord that is used on holiday packages. I think he thought it was alive, because it sort of slithered when he had it in his mouth.

Our house is not nearly as much fun with Chester gone.
