Would you buy a Snoop Dogg cd for an 11 y/o? |
|
I belong to the Y and they have a holiday giving tree. I thought I'd pick one up and help out. Well I looked at what the kids are asking for and was a bit shocked. Most of the gifts were rather expensive (more than my SO and I are spending on each other) like play station 2 and games, etc. There was an 11 y/o girl who wanted a Snoop Dogg cd. I just looked on Amazon and nearly all his cds have the explicit lyrics warning. Is it me or are these kids a little over the top?

14. My 9 year old likes Sublime |
|
I was fine with him listening to it, 'cause cuss words are just cuss words in my opinion.
Then he was playing with his dinosaurs and said "Pull a 987 (or whatever that number is) on a mother fu__'in cop!". That put an end to his Sublime listening!

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't "Snoop Dogg" involved in an altercation recently involving knifes at an awards show? Hardly a role model in my opinion...

Suge Knight and Young Buck were the most famous ones I'm aware of that were involved in the altercation. He is however married with kid and coaches a youth football team, that is role model material imo.

First of all, to much profanity and drug references, second, Snoop's played out. It's 2004 not 1994.

Get her something better, not because it's inappropriate, but rather because it sucks.

7. man, snoop was my favorite when he came out |
|
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 05:17 PM by mark414
i was only 7 or 8 and i LOVED HIM
he and dre, man they were the greatest
i turned out alright
it's all about the context, and whether or not parents treat their kids like idiots. my parents respected me and realized i wasn't stupid. but at the first sign of me being negatively influenced by some of this music (for example, swearing at my parents), i wouldn't be allowed to have it for awhile...
and on edit: don't buy his new cd. not because of concerns over language or anything, but because it sucks. real real bad. buy those kids the new mos def album instead.

But I would buy Green Day's "American Idiot" even though it does have the F word a couple of times. A bunch of 12-year-olds wanted that in my kid's running group.
I don't think it is appropriate for a child to ask for an expensive gift, but many children haven't been taught those kind of manners, so you can't really blame them.
Snoop is a little on the violent side as a person and in his lyrics (IMO).
Buy something cool but that you feel good about.

Especially since it is for an anonymous child. I would leave the option up to the parents of said child to choose to buy Snoop Dogg CD.

It's sorta like the ask mom when dad says no routine. The kid might be asking for something that they know they'd never be allowed to have. Violent video games were also popular requests.

13. Expurgated lyrics are available on cds |
|
Unfortunately, they are usually only available at Walmart.
Eleven year olds like this crap. I know this because I have an eleven year old. My rule of thumb - if I really disapprove of the lyrics or cover art, I won't buy it.
It's nice of you to do this for the kids. They really do want these things, but anything you give will be appreciated.
