Outerbanks has a new inlet

Hurry, we need to get our submissions for a name in! "Oregon Inlet" is already taken.

I've heard that they've seen dolphins swimming through the inlet. Nature sure has a way of getting her point across.

1. That's at Hatteras
and Hatteras Village has been all but totally destroyed. I don't know what they are going to do about the inlet except that I do know they are running a cable across it in the next several days for power...and so boats will be prohibited from crossing.

3. I wonder
if the drum and stripers are piling up at either end of the inlet. Should be a lot of underwater structure for the fish to hide in and should be pretty good fishing!

It's the blue house just south of the new inlet!!! That's my house! Well, not mine, but damn. Weird.

Here's a picture that I can show:

6. Same thing happened to Pawleys Island (SC) during Hugo
Edited on Mon Sep-22-03 08:35 PM by undisclosedlocation
Unless I'm hallucinating. I suspect they brought in truckloads of sand (that horsepoo word "renourishment") and that NC will do the same. Anyway, I don't think Pawleys (we're too poor for apostrophes here) Island is still split in half.

Old guy's memory still works:
Hurricane Hugo took its toll on the beach and development on Pawleys Island. Areas landward of large dunes were protected from overwash. Low dunes also survived, probably because they were rapidly flooded and overtopped by the storm surge. More than 3 miles of shoreline required emergency beach nourishment following the storm. Development at the south end was severely impacted and 27 of the 29 houses located there were destroyed. A channel breached the southern spit but was consequently filled and the houses rebuilt.

Suspect you'll see the same thing done at Hatteras.

7. Breach Inlet
cuts between Sullivans Is and Ilse of Palms, South Carolina. The island was "Breached" long before the Civil war. It is still there.

8. I vote to leave it alone
Buy back the houses on the "island" and just let it return to nature :)

As the other houses "come down"....leave 'em down :)
