2. I have a hard time telling them apart...
could you name some songs from each so I don't get them confused.

I have that same problem with REO Speedwagon and Journey.

5. Rush--"working man"
Styx - "welcome to the grand illusion" (I have no idea if that is the proper song name but the song blew IMO)

3. HOW in the hell can you even ask this question?
You'd better be under 30 -- Styx vs Rush? I am shocked and appalled!
Maybe a Styx vs Kansas or Styx vs Boston poll.... but Rush? LOL! ;)

6. had more direct interaction (at my young age at the time)
with Styx... so can only react with affiliation with memories of songs, rather with the real music from each band. Funny that way - old music, for me, conjours up memories associated with that music even more than the music iteslf.

8. Don't recall - but was just thinking of the sax part
between the stanza and chorus of "Baker Street"... and lamenting that you don't hear much saxophone entwined in music anymore. (Imo, it is the only reason why the song I mentioned is even memorable.)

12. I think that was Gerry Rafferty?
Robin Trower was really bluesy kind of Stevie Ray Vaughnish

13. True
They were very different types of music. Still, hard choice for me because I loved them both. I had to finally rest upon which I still love - definitely Rush.

9. Well, I was going for an appealingly odd choice.
Actually, I wish I were under 30.

I think.

Rush rocked, but I liked Styx too. They really kicked ass now and then. But I know what you mean. I was just thinking that Rush could be called the Tool of the 70s. Well, maybe.

I would be upset if someone tried to compare say, AC/DC, to REO Speedwagon or Maiden to Poison, so I can see where you're coming from.

I was kidding really and I know what you mean about Rush being a tool of the 70's (although they seemed so cool at the time lol)

10. Rush by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much more progressive and edgier back then and far better musicians, "Working Man, Fly by Night, Trees, etc..."

14. Don't like either, but HATE Rush
Why does the lead singer sound like a chipmunk? I get a mental picture of Saturday morning cartoons when I hear them.

15. Rush, By A Light Year!
Styx:
With DeYoung they are pompous, ponderous, and sophomoric. Without him, they are pedestrian midwest rockers. (BTW: The only things keeping DeYoung from being the worst piano player in rock history are Billy Joel, Elton John, and Kevin Kronin.)

Rush:
Three superb players pushing the boundries of what is "acceptable" popular music.

No comparison.
