To Professionals With Notebook Computers
I'm preparing to re-enter the workforce and will be doing work at the office and at home on a computer.

Is a notebook a pain in the ass to lug back and forth from home to work every day? Is it more convenient to have desk tops at both locations?

Your opinions are appreciated!

1. Do you plan on working anywhere alse?
If not go with 2 desktops.

notebooks are a pain in the a**

They have a short lifespan, they're easy to lose, easy to steal, more trouble than they're worth.

VPN from home and enjoy a more powerfull box at work.

2. What I do
I have a desktop at home and I keep my laptop at work (mostly) during the week, but I always bring it home for the weekends. I sometimes use it for my son if I have to take him to a political meeting so he can watch a movie on it while I do my thing.

Either way, it's nice to have a laptop, even if you don't lug it back and forth every single day.

3. Good grief no
Laptops are great. Get the right carrier and lugging isn't even an issue(I have a great bookbag/backpack).

I am(was, got laid off recently) a Sys Admin so mobile computing is a necessity.

4. Notebook!
One database, one list of favorites, one set of files. Get a wireless capable notebook and you can sit on the couch watching C-span and post at the same time. It doesn't get much better than that.

5. I finally caved in and got a lap top a few years ago
now i use it more than my desk top. It's no more trouble carrying it around then a backpack or brief case.

9. Ditto
My top of the line desktop gathers dust, while my laptop is like another purse.

8. Like my laptop. But other options.
You can get a portable USB2 Hard Drive, and just carry your work files back and forth, rather than the entire machine. That way you can have the faster desktops at both ends.

OTOH, it is handy to have a laptop.

10. Carrying a laptop around is like being attached to an anchor.
If you just want to keep in contact with your recent work or to keep home and office up to date think about a USB flash drive. You can carry it in your pocket and won't have to worry about losing it or dropping it and breaking it.

11. I went with a laptop...
but I do have a digital optical mouse. I also bought a laptop with a ten key on the side and a 17" screen.

And when I have a lot of typing, I hook up a regular kepboard for good ergonomics, as it is placed on my pullout keyboard holder and not on my desk.

I wouldn't go back to the desk top for anything.

12. I bought a new laptop to take to Japan in September
(12" iBook), and ever since, I've used it almost exclusively, first on my home wireless network, and then, when I get tired of sitting around the apartment, over to the Wi-Fi-equipped coffee shop a block away.

I hardly ever turn on my four-year-old desktop computer anymore, and when I replace it, I'm going to replace it with a large Powerbook and demote the iBook to travel use only.
