What Children's Shows Do You Like?
Or... "what children's shows don't drive you nuts, and you can actually tolerate watching them?"

When babysitting my niece, I discovered that Dragon Tales, Arthur, and Cyberchase made my job much easier... and they weren't too terrible either.

1. I like Hi-5
The people on the show sing live and don't lip sync. My children love to sing along and dance with the show. The songs aren't bad and I can tolerate watching with them. :)

His voice irritates me. He sets a bad example for young children by demonstrating how to annoy the hell out of adults.

28. Sponge bob gives me the giggles
although I have never actualy watched an episode from start to finish

at times teletubbies can be good, but when the original producer left the show all the characters became plot driven, lost its freshness

Quite often.

I also liked the original Ren & Stimpy cartoons that were on Nickelodeon. The ones on Spike TV just plain suck.

2. PBS Kids is great stuff.
Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 12:07 AM by Ilsa
Between the Lions is a wonderful program for learning to read. I like Arthur. My five year old son loves Zoom! I liked Liberty's Kids, but it doesn't play here any more. I haven't seen Zaboomafoo in a long time, but my youngest liked it also.

I don't care too much for Maya and Miguel because it seems like there are only three or four episodes.

42. PBS is great....
Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 01:38 PM by stlchic
Although, I knew that either I had been exposed to it way too much, or I was really tired when I actually became engrossed with a "Clifford" storyline when watching it with my boys.

"Oh, my gosh....how can Emily Elizabeth even stand to be around such a stuck up snob like Jetta...."

I had to leave the living room immediately to read my ACLU newsletter just remind myself that I was, you know, not in pre-school.

Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 12:19 AM by mac56
I was prepared to hate them, but they're clever and talented and having a hell of a lot of fun.

Worst of all, however, is "Rugrats" and all its spawn.

Add: Caillou bugs the ever-lovin' out of me too.

8. My kid has outgrown educational kid's shows
Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 12:11 AM by Nevernose
Dragon Tales, Arthur, and Cyberchase just aren't very interesting to her anymore, and there's nothing much educational for age group (8-10), at least not that I've been able to find.

SpongeBob and Fairly Odd Parents are actually pretty good, and extremely clever -- I've caught myself watching them when she wasn't even home! :)

37. HBO Family has a good show for elementary-school-age kids
It's known as Crashbox. It's usually on from 3-4 PM Eastern, and features subjects such as math, reading, social studies, and science presented in a fun way. A kid I used to babysit watches that show and enjoys it.

10. To be honest, I find children's TV to be a nice break.
With all the awful crap in so many forms on the rest of the dial, sometimes it's nice to have a 5 minute break with a kids' show. Don't laugh.

Perhaps I'm over analyzing, but I think kids' TV represents the world as we want it to be. Whenever someone's in trouble, all his or her friends come to help. When there's a problem, all the characters work on a solution together. You never see one of the characters on the sidelines shouting "you're such an ass, Big Bird! That'll never work!! Get a freakin' job!!!"

See what I mean?

I also think that the people who appear in those shows are some of the best people in society, like Mr. Rogers. I mean, here's a guy who devoted his whole life to putting together a quiet, gentle and educational program for children, so that maybe they'd learn some values they could keep for the rest of their lives. Not to damn shabby, Mr. Rogers.

18. Mr. Rogers is an excellent show
He was a wonderful man, and his show promoted progressive ideals. I'm so glad it is my 3 year old's favorite show, and that they still run the repeats. He truly knew his audience and how to speak to them. I think it was the best pre-school television show ever made.

27. Mr. Rogers is still the best.
I forbid the channel to be changed when we find his show. And then, despite the "dork factor", everyone ends up watching the program.

It still gives me hope and a better attitude. I could use those things right now. Gotta go to work.

43. But what is up with Stephanie's pink hair?
My almost 3-yr-old loves this show, and I don't mind it because I get a kick out of watching him dance and jump around imitating Spartacus.

But, some of the characters really have me scratching my head.

The "bad" guy (I don't remember his name) reminds me of Jim Carrey for some reason.

45. It's a show direct from Iceland.
And like most foreign shows, child and otherwise, I sometimes feel strange watching it because it's different than what I'm used to. I don't feel like I totally get it or something.

The "bad guy"....it's so funny that they're trying to say if you don't excersize you'll be all pasty and greasy looking! I'm not sure what's up with the girl's pink hair either....actually, I was a bit surprised that Nick put it on their lineup, because it's so quirky/Icelandic. Never you mind that, just concentrate on Spartacus' arms....yuuummmmmm.
