Salary Negotiations(or getting royally screwed)

Has anyone ever had a company do this...you talk to the person, they offer you a salary equivalent to oh say 40 dollars an hour, and offer you 2 weeks vacation and health benefits...all well and good.

Then when the official offer comes, BAM! the salary is equal to about 32 dollars an hour, because they say the benefits and days off come out of your end, and they lowered your salary to make up the difference.

I just had a company do that to me...i was pissed, sent them a nasty email...needless to say, i won't be accepting the position.

Is this a normal practice in business? seems pretty scammy to me.

1. That sounds like crap. Salary =/ total compensation package

Now, if they said, "We're prepared to offer you a total compensation package of, say, $70,000" of which only $60,000 turned out to be salary, that's fine. But to use the term salary and then reduce it by the level of additional compensation isn't right, and in fact, renders moot the term "additional" compensation or benefit.

But I can't say I've ever had it happen... :( Man, $32/hr sounds good to me!

I hope you find someplace that is more up-front about what they are offering you!

3. It's a standard management tactic.

Always get it in writing ! These smarmy bastids always lie, ALWAYS. Then they act like they have no clue what you are talking about. Meanwhile, he knows he's lying, you know he's lying, and he knows you know it ! I think they get off on it.

4. No, it's not normal business practice.

Sounds to me like they're hoping you're eager or desperate enough for the position to accept the lower offer.

Not sure you should have sent a nasty email, but good for you for refusing the position.

5. the best part is...after i wrote the guy back...

he writes me an email acting like its normal, and even has the nerve to say....i wouldn't dream of trying to screw you over, you're far too smart for that...

The nerve of some people!
