1. WTF?
I was never a huge fan, but Darrell was a pretty decent guitarist (as far as that kind of music goes). It was obviously pre-planned, at least according to http://www.nbc4i.com/news/3983630/detail.html

That is pretty fucked up, no doubt.

2. I wonder when footage will surface...
A strange thought, I know. However, I'm heavily active in the trading of "unauthorized" live recordings, and I'd say the odds are pretty good somebody had a video camera in there when everything went down.

I'm hearing/reading that the dude was followed onto stage by security and another club employee...if true, that puts a very, very odd wrinkle into the whole story...

3. Not the biggest Pantera fan
But what happened last night was a tragedy beyond words.

Darrell Abbott inspired lots of people to play guitar. No one should have to get killed doing what they love and live for.

My condolonces to his family and fans. It's sad.

This is a tragedy, a horrible act that will not only scar the lives of Darrell's friends and family, but all of the fans there who had to witness a murder.
I believe Darell was a regular contributor to guitar playing and other music publications, helping to teach people guitar and such.

My prayers for his soul and the people who cared about him.

28. Darrell's articles in Guitar Player were great...
...and in his interviews, he came across as a genuine guitar hero, looking to teach and learn, and working hard to help others who looked up to him. My favorite quote from him is "Hey, a guitar has 6 strings, use them all!"

He will be missed.

43. I think it's unnecessary to wish for others' death because we've
had this tragedy. I am sorry for DD's family and fans, but I am a fan of Bon Jovi and as far as I know, Jon hasn't advocated DD's death like Phil Anselmo. I'm not trying to be a hardass, but I thought this was a bit uncalled-for.

Not to mention, JBJ is a big liberal. :)

52. Perhaps I should explain:
Phil Anselmo had (or may still have) a pretty healthy heroin habit and has OD'd at least once, hence the irony of it all. I wasn't wishing death upon anybody.

25. Big fan of Dime!!
It is a very sad day for metal. My singer called my this morning and told me. I already went through: denial, shock, grief, and anger. Got my Pantera t-shirt on under my work shirt, Pantera cds at my desk.

I heard that Vinne Paul the drummer might have been wounded and some repots say 2 members of the band were killed. If he dies to that will be both of the Abbot boys gone. This is so bullcrap. I can expect Ozz to kick off but not Dime.

I guess the motive was the killer was pissed about the Pantera break up. Bastard should have killed Phil instead.

32. I hope Phil Anselmo feels good this morning...
Here are some quotes from an interview he gave last week to Metal Hammer (UK) Magazine:

"I think, more or less, it lies between Dimebag and I."

"I could kill him like a fuckin' piece of vapor, you know, he would turn into vapor — his chin would, at least, if I fuckin' smacked it."

"I have a devoted following that would do anything for me! Anything that I say."

Well, Phil, I hope you are happy. One of your "devoted following", Nathan Gale, listened to you and he did prove that there are morons out there who would do anything for you. I hope you're happy and that you and your buddy Nathan can spend the rest of eternity in Hell for all I care. God Bless ya Dimebag.

47. I read that interview
It wasn't as sinister as those lifted quotes winging around the net make it sound. He was complaining how Dime would get drunk and rage in his face all the time, how he could've easily pasted him for it, but didn't. And the "devoted following" bit was just some leaving-Pantera-hasn't-diminished-my-popularity braggadocio, not a claim to being a Svengali. It's a bit much to hang this on him.

Otherwise though, yeah, Phil's an asshole.

74. Oderus from GWAR re: Phil
A few weeks ago Dave Brockie AKA Oderus Urungus had this to say about Phil Anselmo:

"Dave Brockie: "About two years ago. We know his girlfriend Kate; she's a good friend of ours. So we called Kate, and we said, 'What the fuck is up with Phil badmouthing GWAR?' So she asked him about it and he says , 'I didn't say anything about GWAR!' About a week later, I'm doing this interview in Denver and the first thing he asked me was why is Phil Anselmo so not into GWAR? I just talked to him the other day and he spent the whole interview talking shit about you guys! So I let him have it. I mean, he won't be the first to die by the sword, that redneck moron. First of all, no one gives a fuck about PANTERA anymore. Second, he should get his fuckin' racist, redneck, chunky, ass off the fuckin' mic talking shit about bands that are heavy metal fuckin gods. If you're gonna complain about something, why don't you complain about the election, why not complain about the fascist state our country is slipping into, why don't you complain about that fact that you're a junkie? Why do you want to rip GWAR? You sure as fuck don't want to get into any kind of match with me, because I'm going to kick your fuckin' ass!"

I'm very glad to see someone in heavy metal calling that loser out on his right-wing bullshit.

75. hold the phone...
Just found this apology. Shit. I can see why he'd apologize for some of the shit he said, but I wish he hadn't backed off of his criticism of Phil being a racist ass, and I DEFINITELY wish he hadn't said "Long Live Superjoint Ritual"...

"I want everybody to know that this past weekend I personally apologized to both Phil and Kate for the erroneous, vicious, and inflammatory remarks recently made by myself. That shit about Phil trying to score dope on the bus happened at least eight years ago and is ancient history. Kate has always been just our friend and never anything more (though she hates me now, I'm sure). The only reason I vomited forth such crap is because I felt my band was under attack. Since talking to Phil over the weekend I realize that, too, was bullshit. I was goaded by the press and lashed out in anger, falling totally into a trap. In doing so, I hurt some people I really love and respect. I would even apologize in person if given the opportunity, and seeing as we are headed to New Orleans on our current GWAR tour, I hope Phil and Kate would consider that as an option to mend the pain I have caused. Once again, my full and most sincere apologies to Philip Anselmo, Kate and all concerned. Long live SUPERJOINT RITUAL, long live GWAR, long live metal!!!!!!!"

76. Phil's been pretty fucked up for a LONG time
going back to the Pantera days - he should have kept his mouth shut but raging drug habits do strnge things to people.

He DIDN'T kill Darrell - while I've never done it in public I've said "i could kill XXX" plenty of times - so have most people, doeasn't mean I'm repsonsible if someone else does.

Flashing back to my teenage years now (music taste has changed but Vulgar Display still gets the odd spin) very sad.

62. The names of the others killed:
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 01:36 PM by DinoBoy
From a Yahoo News story:

Besides Abbott (Dimebag) and Gale (shooter), police said the dead included Nathan Bray, 23, and Erin Halk, 29. Police said the name of the fifth person killed was being withheld pending notification of family.

The whole story, which has a pretty coherent explanation of what happened (it appears the shooter was screaming something about breaking up Pantera, and had a hostage), can be found here.

63. I can understand being upset that a band breaks up...
but damn, nowhere near that upset.

Gotta be more to it than that. Gotta be.

66. the idea that someone would kill musicians while they
are on stage (or at all) is horrifying. That is very sad. :(

71. My best years of High School and after were filled with Pantera.
I used get pumped for football games and track meets by listening to "By Demons Be Driven", and "Regular People". My friends and I would spend our weekends getting drunk and partying listening to "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Far Beyond Driven" all while our girlfriends bitched in a corner about the music. I can't imagine what my formative years would have been like if Pantera hadn't been helping me along the way. I can't believe the person who is responsible for getting me through the years was cut down for no reason.

I hope at his funeral they play Cemetery Gates, and Hollow. It would just seem fitting.

72. Any word from Phil?
Anybody heard any comments from Phil Anselmo? He's one sketchy motherfucker and RIGHT WING as FUCK. I'm curious to hear what he says about it.

Man--I really feel for the families of everyone involved--including the family of the killer--they certainly didn't ask for this kind of attention.
