Honest Question. What is an "Uncle Tom?"
I've heard the term used before but I'm not exactly sure what it means. I assume it is in reference to the book, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" but I have never read it. It is used as a term for african american folks, I assume. Is it derogatory? Is it used mostly by african americans or white folks? or both?

I'm not trying to stir up anything if this is controversial, I just don't know what it means exactly and thought I'd ask.

7. Thank you for pointing that out.
I've said many times that "Uncle Tom" was too kind a word for Clarence Thomas.

6. dictionary definitions are so cold
and dry. They don't really give you a good feel for the current use of a word or phrase. That's why I prefer people.
