DCers and visitors! what's your favourite monument/memorial/museum?
mine is a toss up between the fdr memorial and the jefferson memorial. very different styles, but two beautiful locations, and very well put together.

7. the fdr memorial...
is four 'rooms', four fountains, one representing each of his terms. in each 'room' there are friezes, bronze statues and quotes from that term on the walls. i have a picture of me standing next to eleanor roosevelt. it's a beautiful open space, with lots of trees...very elegant and it makes you pensive. a beautiful memorial.

the wall is...different. it's so stark, it makes you want to cry. all those names...all those lives lost for a stupid misadventure that should never have happened. the simplicity makes for a really bracing impact. you come away from that one truly humbled.

4. Some Favorites
Monument: Lincoln, for the speeches inscribed on the walls.

Museum: Smithsonian Museum of American History

I also like the area around the JFK Gravesite in Arlington, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald's Graves in Rockville, The National Cathedral and the National Gallery of Art and the Hirschorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.....

5. Vietnam Veteran's Memorial
You can not go there and not be effected. Being a retired salt I looked up Admiral Boorda's grave at Arlington. Nothing fancy, just a government issue headstone far away from the big monuments. He is looking right at the Pentagon. Very intense for a swabbie who really loved his Admiral.

6. FDR is so beautfiul, and Lincoln Mem is great too..
Abe is so big up there! I think it would be great to work on the Mall with the Park Service. Lots of people, Republicans and Democrats, but almost everyone is there for the same reason..
