39. I'm sure you know what Mark Twain said about learning German
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 06:33 PM by Pax Hayden
so I won't repeat it here.

I tried learning German in college: It sent me screaming to the Spanish department after half a semester! German seems to have, like, fifty million different conjugations of a single verb. Gah!

It nearly made me want to go out and start a war.

I love history 'tho. What is your favorite time period? Mine: Ancient Rome. I'm a big fan of Plutarch. (Okay, he was Greek... but he was writing for the Romans.)

ON EDIT: Edited the 3rd paragraph.

My favorite time period is the modern era of Europe, from the French Revolution to the present. I am especially interested in underground resistance movements. I wrote my dissertation on the resistance movement in Nazi-occupied Poland: "The Power of the Idea versus the Force of Arms."

56. Quick question for you:
Why did Napoleon invade Russia?

What resource was he after? And don't give the pat: "He was pissed that the Czar was disobeying the Continental System."

Why would Napoleon would want to pick a fight after he got his butt handed to him by the Spanish.

The year before he crossed into Russia the two nations were supposed to be allies! Besides, Napoleon soundly crushed the Russian armies a few years earlier... so he had to have known that the Czar was not an offensive threat.

I've Goggled this question but I've never gotten a satisfactory answer.

58. A quick response...
In my opinion Napoleon's invasion of Russia came about not because he was after a resource per say, but rather out of egotism, and megalomania. Yes, the Russians were in violation of the Continental System, but Napoleon did have a severe case of megalomania; namely, he did not want an equal, or rival, to his absolute (as he perceived it) rule of the continent. The sheer size of the Russian population caused fear among a number of European leaders over the course of time; and I believe that Napoleon was of the opinion that the Russians (i.e. the Tsar) would become a threat if not soundly defeated, and on Russian territory (i.e. the most substantive victory over the Russians came at Austerlitz, which was located within the boundaries of the Habsburg Empire), because of the size of the army they would eventually be able to put into the field.

When the invasion was launched there were approximately 425,000 soldiers in the French Army. However, about half of these were not French, thus adding to Napoleon's belief that the Europeans were in support of his rule. This, however, was one of the reasons for the less than stellar performance of the Grand Armee in Russia. Yes, I know the French were credited with the victory at Borodino, but (in my opinion) the Russians were out to buy time in this battle. They were trading territory for time to allow the Russian winter to inflict causalities.

As far as having his butt handed to him in Spain...
The situation in Spain was similar to that of Iraq today. The Spanish Army was defeated by the French in the standard battles, but the guerrilla resistance became the major problem for the French. Napoleon even had one of his brother Josef installed as the king of Spain. The French controlled the cities and had a puppet government (note: Goya's painting: The Shootings of May Third 1808), but did not control the countryside. The Spanish actions against the French in the countryside is where the modern English word 'guerrilla' originates (it is the diminutive form of 'guerra' the Spanish for war). In this aspect, the French were having their butts handed to them.

I hope this 'quick' answer was satisfactory.

46. Thanks for the thanks. Am stressed for no good reason.. you'd think
being an at-home mom would be stress-free. But I am queen of time mismanagement, so I hang out here, do some freelance writing and editing, play with my kids, much on a bunch of food, and next thing I know my house is still a mess and I have sucked down two days' worth of calories.

This is an old pattern for me. Ya'd think I'd want to try something new by now, but nooooo. *lol*

50. Let me get this straight:
You spent the day writing & editing random thoughts, played with your kids and ate food all day. This is a bad thing?

Are you scared you are an underachiever? Are you expecting to write some glorious novel and then go on Oprah just so everyone can tell you what a wonderful person you are?

Your kids already know that. Who are you trying to impress?

Achieving things is over-rated. Look at Hitler! He achieved a whole lot... but he would have been a lot more useful to the world if he had stayed home and smoked a bong.*

As for the calories, well, the people I love are the most beautiful people I know at any weight. I'm sure your family feels the same way.

*That line is paraphrased from the movie "The Tao of Steve."

54. Heheh. Not so random thoughts. I really am working on
stories, but I harbor no illusions about getting on Oprah. *lol* Don't need to go there, just want to get my stories done, sold, and the money put towards a house a little larger than this trailer.

And the mess is an actual issue. I mean, we have completely lost the kitchen sink and counter. Again

And yeah, my boys love me no matter what size I am. They think I am "cozy".
