New Species of Guinea Pigs Discovered: a 'faithful' guinea pig

BERLIN (AFP) - German scientists hailed the discovery of a new species of guinea pig in Bolivia which differs from its cousins by remaining faithful to one partner.

"This species of guinea pig is different from others because of its monogamous behaviour," Professor Norbert Sachser, the head of the animal behaviour department at Muenster University, told a press conference.

The species, which has been given the Latin name "Galea monasteriensis" (Muenster Guinea Pig), is the only one of the 14 known species of the notoriously prolific guinea pig to reproduce with a single partner," Sachser said.

In fact, "Muenster" is a rare find among mammals in general, as only three to five percent of the 4,250 known species exhibit monogamous behaviour.
