Teacher Appreciation Thread
OK - I volunteered with Junior Achievement and spent the day talking to third graders about what happens in a city.

:silly:

Teachers deal with these kids day in and day out, for not much pay. It isn't just getting them to not be rowdy, trying to make sure they actually learn, but making sure you don't hurt any feelings...hard 'cos the young ones get hurt if you call on a classmate instead of them, and think everything is unfair. I imagine the older ones present their own challenges, like not being so eager to learn.

So, let's give it up for teachers, because boy they have their hands full!

4. teachers have my total admiration and respect
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 04:40 PM by McKenzie
one of my best mates is a teacher of technical studies. He came from a school (no pun) of hard knocks and has seen life. He manages to connect with the kids and gets results, probably because he's been there.

Sheesh, I could wax lyrical here. Suffice to say teaching kids is one responsible job. I take a deterministic view of character development...what gets put into the kids' heads and what the kids are encouraged to do/become determines how they develop. Who mostly ends up in jail? Is it successful people? (rhetoric) Nope, it's mostly those kids who never got the chance to realise their potential.

It's a tad more complex than that but the role of education is utterly crucial. I have no truck with the "free will" fuckwits...we are products of our circumstances and our upbringing with a few notable exceptions.

Teachers are really really important. Provided they aren't just there to teach kids how to succeed in the commercial world...a wide education benefits kids and society as a whole.

5. I love teachers!!!! I can actually remember most of mine
and my daughter has had wonderful ones so far. My only complaint?? Teachers should be paid a hell of a lot more.

8. Teachers rock
With very few exceptions, I really enjoyed being around my high school teachers - they and my two best friends were the ones who made high school tolerable for me in my little farming town of less than 2000 people where to be cool you had to be on the football team (not sure why since I was in marching band and went to every home football game for four years and can't remember not only a single victory but a single touchdown scored by our team).

My math teacher wrote in my senior yearbook that he enjoyed having me in class because it was nice to have a student who was actually interested in doing more than breathing. He showed up outside my dorm room one weekend my first year of college (I went to his alma mater to study math) and took me out to dinner at the local famous chicken place. Nice guy.
