My close brush with Pataki...what would you guys have done???
Last weekend, I was invited out to meet my boyfriend's grandparents, and they took us to this quaint, understated but VERY OLDSCHOOL Italian restuarant in Westchester County. Lots of older wealthy Italians, great food, we met the owners, and my BF's grandparents gossiped about the patrons they knew, including "connected" patrons (wink wink knudge knudge). And then the conversation turns to politics and I find out that the grandparents are competely repukes. whatever, I can live with that. Then the restaurant owner comes up and announces that Pataki is probably coming in for dinner, and how he comes there like once a month and lives 15 minutes away! WELL dear DUers, I sat there with intense personal turmoil, not knowing what to do if he actually showed up! Risk alienating potential future family, or just sit there and be the quiet demure girl I was pretending to be? I was eventualyl spared the choice, since we left around 7, and he was slated to come in at 8. But considering my BF's grandparents have been frequenting this restuarant for 30+ years, it is likely we will go there again, and maybe I will get the chance...what would you guys do??? I think I couldn't do much more than muster a "Spitzer 2006!" but who knows....

2. I think your only option is coolness.

You're in a situation where everyone's comfort and dignity is on the line. If politics is completely unavoidable, you could say you are very passionate about your beliefs and values, and that you stand for X, Y and Z.

And if you encounter Pataki, well, what else can you do but give the cold glance? I'm afraid a scene (My own fantasy is screaming, "You're a disgrace to Hungarian-Americans!") is out of the question.

7. I think you're right...
wow have I changed...5 years ago, I would have INSISTED on staying until he got there! But yeah a cold glance would have still been pretty satisfying, and not legally actionable.

14. There is a long tradition
of making a serious political statement by throwing a pie in the face of a hated political figure. You would be famous too. Check it out:

And if your boyfriend dumps you for doing it I'll ask you out because that would be a super cool thing to do.

I don't think my BF would dump me, he'd laugh his ass off! If I end up married to him we'd prolly be cut out of the will which financially doesn't bother me but their house in Spain woulda been nice....BTW that site is scary :scared: On edit, we can still flirt ;)

6. You might ask him how he could ....

appoint Senator Vellella's octogenarian ( and, reputedly, "connected", wink, wink) dad as head of the Bronx County Board of Elections shortly before the old gent asks to be declared "legally incompetent" to avoid jailtime in his son's bribery plea deal.

Only in New York. ( Actually, probably in Ohio, too. And Florida, of course. And.... etc. etc. etc.)

18. here's my .02
"Mr. Pataki, I'd have a lot more respect for you, as would a lot of other NYers, if you didn't run again for governor." Then smile, perhaps shake his hand, and leave him there wondering.
