For those who've met someone online, how did you get together? |
|
I was wondering about people who meet while posting or chatting on various sites, DU included. How did you know that this person or that person was someone you wanted to know better? Was is something they said? Did they flirt with you? What sparked the mutual interest? There's a whole subculture going on here at DU and it's something I've always been curious about.

2. I am actually married to someone I met online |
|
Honestly. We met on AOL in a chat room in Feb '97. We chatted and emailed for 2 weeks. For 3 weeks we had phone calls and by the time we met we were madly in love and moved in 2 months later. Our anniversary is 12/26 and we'll have been married for 3 years. I'm so lucky. We just clicked right away. I don't know what I would have done without him.

10. It was , "The Flirt's Nook" |
|
It was such a stupid name of a room that I had been chatting online for about 6 months and I NEVER went in there. But one day I was annoyed because I thought for sure my ex had sent me a chain letter and a little voice in my head told me to click that link and I did. I read his profile and found out that he was born exactly 9 days before me and I thought that was interesting so I kept talking to him and the rest is history. Now we celebrate "Birthday Week" where we go one vacation or give presents on random days, keep up a Happy BIrthday sign up for two weeks and other types of fun. Crazy huh?

5. I have a daughter with someone I met online |
|
Years back I had an IRC channel. Not many people on in those days. We met, talked for months, and I finally took the plunge and drove across country to live with her. It was a good few years. She was 10 years younger than I. Her parents controlled her life (she was 19) and we eventually parted ways (very very long story).
Our daughter is in 1st grade, and I just spoke with my old lover yesterday. We are both married now and happy, but we still fondly remember the times we had. It just was not working - mainly due to issues outside ourselves (my divorce and kids back here, her parents ruling her life there).
We both got our problems fixed finally. Had I known she was pregnant when I left I would have stayed, but she did not even know until she was 4-5 months pregnant. For 2 years I asked her to marry me, and she wanted to wait. Then she wanted me back and I was already moved on and marrying the woman I am still with.
But do I regret it all? Hell no. Best years I can recall - a renewing of my life and hers. We still click, and maybe something is still there (she had often mentioned how it would be like a romance novel if we ever came back together). But we both have new lives, I have another daughter, she a new son. Had things been different by a week we would be together now.
I wrote poems about the whole time and ordeal. A magical time in life to me and fond memories of a new life in a new world. Wonderful, Painful, sad, happy, and so much more.

6. I met my partner through salon.com |
|
We just did the usual exchange a few e-mails meet up for a drink-mention that I just want to be friends on the second date-change my mind at a p-funk show-hit on him after dinner later that week-hook up that weekend-now it's been two and a half years and we are still together-kind of thing
I met lots of people through internet dating. i never really took it seriously until I met A. but it was lots of fun. usually i just met up with people who seemed like we could have a conversation over coffee without wanting to kill each other over politics or sit in painful silence.
Once I met a guy who I was talking to in a chat room. he was looking to alter his brain juice and I had the goods. that was wierd.

but that was through a sex chat site. We had already cybered then emailed often each day, then talking on the phone. Eventually we met and the sparks just flew. If things went just a little differently we'd be together today.

9. Is this the thread where I can beg for someone to love me? |
|
I had two on-line boyfriends, back in the day -- like 1999. I'm a writer, so it was the coolest thing ever. I met one after a year and a half, the other, I never met. The former is now one of the mayors of Stockholm and the girlfriend from which I attempted to steal him is a member of the Swedish parliament.
It was tragic, tragic. She was more powerful than me, but I did fall in love with another man while I was over there -- whom I didn't get together with again, until over a year later, and then, even though he was seriously my soulmate, the sex was terrible, and it traumatized me so that I didn't talk to him for over a year.
I suggest you fall in love with a foreigner and get a trip out of it, the couple of months I spent in Stockholm were wonderful, as heartbreaking as it all was.

Beg for someone to love me? No one's filling my PM box if that's what you mean. Just a sense of curiousity about how people met online and what their relationships were like.

beg away.
You may not have to beg very long. My interest is piqued with your talk of lovers in Europe and the experiences you've had.

We were both rather heavily into this freeform roleplaying (non-sexual) scene, as kind of a creative outlet. We met in 2001, in a chat room. We chatted loosely for a few months, out-of-character, but nothing serious or consistent. This went on for the next two years or so, until one day mentioned her upcoming and expectedly lonely birthday, so I badgered her into letting me call her. Just for that day.
It took us about a month to progress from conversing every four days to every single night.
Visited her for two weeks, things went smoothly. Then my mother (whom I was living with while school was out) rather unexpectedly announced she was selling the house. I couldn't stay with my father, thanks to a bitchy step-mother, so...I asked her if I could stay with her.
That was nineteen months ago, and I'm still here.
