Best Rock Vocal Performances |

My vote goes to John Lennon on Twist And Shout. It has that great timbre to it that he gets when screams and it's just on the edge of breaking up.

When the words are perfect, it doesn't need embellishment.

2. Lately I've been listening to |

some old Patti Smith "Radio Ethiopia", particularly "Poppies", and Bjork's "So Broken". I prefer women vocalists.

I know Pete Townsend takes a beating around here, but there is no denying that The Who were one of the best of the best. Plus I've been listening to "Who's Next" a lot lately. Brilliant album.

5. Ann Wilson from Heart- their first few albums |

She is very underrated as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure a lot of that is because of the crap they did in the 80s.
But the Magic Man and Little Queen albums rock and she has the pipes! I saw them live a few times back then - she blew the doors off!

6. Lennon's vocal sounds that way because that was the last song they did |

that day. I think the story is they recorded that entire album in one day and saved that song till the end knowing it would blow out his voice.

7. "You Know You're A Man" - Captain Beefheart |
|
He has this multi-octave range that is effortless and not flashy at all. It's like he channels Howlin' Wolf and Little Richard at once on this one.
From an emotional standpoint, Ronnie Van Zant's vocal on "Was I Right Or Wrong?" (the version from 'Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Recordings') is my favorite. The regret, the sense of loss, the weight of the world is all in there, without being overwrought... just always gives me chills.

That man can wrench a lyric like no other. His voice absolutely soars in the bridge and puts a lump in my throat every time.
